What is hypospadias?

It is the fact that the external urinary tract (urethra) mouth is not at the tip of the penis in a boy, but is lower and behind. It is popularly referred to as “congenitally circumcised” or “circumcised prophet”.

Can hypospadias take different forms?
Hypospadias can occur in different ways along the urinary tract (urethral groove). It is usually classified as grade 1 (glanular), grade 2 (distal), or grade 3 (proximal) hypospadias. In second- and third-degree hypospadias, the penis can be pulled downwards and curved (“chordee”).

Is hypospadias common, what are its causes?
Hypospadias is the most common external genital structure anomaly in boys after undescended testis. Hypospadias, the frequency of which is increasing, can be seen at a rate of 1/250 – 1/500 in male newborns. Undescended testis, kidney development defects, sexual developmental defect (intersex) can be seen with hypospadias. The causes of hypospadias are often endocrine, environmental and genetic factors. It may occur when some chemicals and teratogenic drugs affect the developing baby in the womb.

What is the treatment for hypospadias?
It is surgery. Children with hypospadias have difficulty urinating, painful erection, difficulty in sexual intercourse and negative psychological effects caused by all of these. To solve these problems, surgical treatment is applied between 6 months – 1.5 years. With surgical treatment, a smooth, narrow and leak-free urinary tract is created, and the penile structure is corrected.
