What is lumbar shift (spondylolisthesis) and how does it occur?

by clinic

We have bones that carry us, which we call the spine. The inner surfaces and outer surfaces of these bones go in a line and follow each other so that they are directly above each other.

If there is a slip on these spines, the straight line on these spines will be broken. As a result, one spine is more prominent towards the other. The so-called lumbar slippage basically consists of this.

As a result of this slipping event, our spinal cord passing behind this spine is compressed and sensations such as pain, numbness and burning occur in both legs. While walking, we often have to stop.

This lumbar deviation can occur congenitally or as a result of a fall, accident or heavy birth.

Usually we all fell in some way as children. In such accidents, a slippage may occur in our waist. This shift may remain constant for a lifetime or may become mobile at some point in our lives.

Especially after menopause in women or after osteoporosis in men, this shift becomes active and begins to be more mobile.

What are the Symptoms of Waist Slip?

The most typical symptom of low back pain is the need to stop frequently while walking. While walking, we suddenly have a pain in our legs and we have to stop. After resting for a while, we can easily walk again.

Stopping for very short periods while walking is a sign of a canal stenosis in the lower back. Canal stenosis is a discomfort that usually occurs with waist slippage.

Apart from this, numbness and burning sensations caused by standing for a long time with both legs and sitting for a long time can be a sign of low back slippage.

Frequent cramping and holding the legs at night can also be a sign of back slippage.

How to Treat Slip?

After the waist slip is detected, it is checked whether this waist slip is mobile or not. If the lumbar slippage has occurred and is in an inactive state, it does not necessarily need to be intervened. But if the lumbar slip is mobile, the patient must have surgery. Otherwise, this mobile lumbar slippage completely prevents the patient from walking after a while and may make the person tied to his home and seat.

Low back surgery is one of the most feared surgeries. In these surgeries, which are popularly known as platinum surgery or screw surgery, the risk of being disabled and paralyzed has completely disappeared thanks to the developing technology and robotic surgery. Thanks to this technology, where the screw should go is planned in advance and screws can be sent accordingly. Thus, patients who will undergo this surgery can undergo the surgery very comfortably and without the risk of being disabled or paralyzed.
