There are only a few days left for the semester break. Emphasizing that the holiday is a good opportunity for both parents and children to spend productive time with family members, take small breaks and continue the new period in a more motivated way, Specialist Psychologist Ezgi Dokuzlu from Anadolu Health Center said, “As adults, we need to socialize, rest and relax. It should not be forgotten that children can also feel anxious, tired and overwhelmed these days. Even though the weather is cold, it is very important for both parents and children to spend time in nature in the parks.
Specialist Psychologist Ezgi Dokuzlu from Anadolu Medical Center made suggestions to spend the semester break enjoyable and productive:
- It is important that everyone is willing to spend time with all family members during the holidays. Instead of trying to spend the day to the fullest, the plans and activities made with the common decision of everyone will be more enjoyable for both children and parents.
- You can help children communicate with their peers. Meetings with friends, nature walks and trips can be planned with friends during the holiday.
- You can talk to your children about responsibilities, about chores that need to be done at home. Talking about your plans with children will make them feel valued. Planning the next day or week with your child not only allows them to stick to plans more, but also improves their ability to make decisions and take responsibility.
- Sleeping, waking up, eating, using technology and playing hours should not change. Children should continue their routine routines during the holidays and spend the day productively without disturbing their order. It is important that the order continues in order not to have adaptation problems when returning to school.
- Homework or additional work should not be neglected during the holiday. Every day, at certain time intervals, especially in the morning, short assignments or times such as study, repetition of the subject can be planned.
- While deciding on the activities to do, you can create pleasant times while reinforcing their knowledge with activities that are suitable for the age and development of the child, where they can both have fun and learn.
- Producing, discovering and sharing this is very important for the development of children. You can prepare healthy snacks and try new recipes with your children.
- Skill or creativity-based activities can be planned in which all family members participate.
- From time to time, movies or documentaries chosen by the family in accordance with the development of the children can be watched and then the movie can be evaluated.
- Family reading activities can be planned. Afterwards, the book can be pictured or reinforced with questions.
- Games can be played in which all family members can participate, where competition and competition are not at the forefront.
- You can spend a pleasant and productive time with puzzles, puzzles, educational board games and information cards.
- In order for children not to stay away from education during the holiday, 30-40 minutes of work or repetition of the subject will be useful every day that will not tire the children too much. It is important not to put pressure on their studies, not to force them, to avoid harsh and accusatory warnings and attitudes that will make them feel worthless.
- Screen time and limits should also be reminded on vacation, and this limit should be the same every day. Parents must be consistent and stable while maintaining these rules.
- Parents who say that they can’t find anything to do at home and are bored should give advice on what they can do even if they are at home, how they can spend their time productively and at the same time fun.
- Children should stay away from screens as much as possible during the holiday. For the physical and mental development of children, not only during the holidays but also during the school period, the time spent with a tablet or computer outside of class hours should be limited, and if it is excessive, it should be reduced.
- During the holidays, just like in school, meals should not be eaten while watching a tablet or television. An arrangement should be established for all family members to come together and eat at the same time. The table should be set and assembled with the support of all family members.
- Parents can organize face-to-face or online meetings to bring children together with friends over the holidays. In these meetings, short-term activities that are not very tiring, exercises, and even enjoyable activities that parents can participate in can be done.
- Without limiting children, you can let them have a pleasant time by leaving the control to their imaginations. Constantly guiding them, telling them what to do, interfering with the game they play more than necessary will limit their productivity and creativity in their individual time.
- Children should be reminded how many days the holiday will last and that they will continue to school in the old order after the holiday is over. In order for young children to understand more easily, what is spoken and explained with pictures can be embodied.
