In studies on children and adults with attention deficit, the problem is not found only in the attention area. Symptoms are seen in different areas (6 groups) because he has a problem that concerns the system (upper center) that manages many functions of the brain. In this article, we will try to talk about memory problems, which is the 5th group problem area of attention deficit.

1.Focus (attention),

2.Planning,

3.Desire (motivation),

4.Anger control,

5. Memory

6. Organizational skills.

Memory Problems in Attention Deficit:

Memory is basically divided into two as short-term memory and long-term memory. Individuals with ADHD have more short-term memory problems.

Memory problems in children with Attention Deficit can be listed as follows frequently by families.

‘He forgets his daily homework’

‘Sometimes he forgets what he learned in exams a short time ago’

‘He calculates the hands incorrectly while adding up’

‘While describing what he has read or He also has difficulty answering paragraph questions. He often forgets what he has read’

‘He often gets confused while performing simple commands we want’

‘He loses his belongings. He forgets where he put it’

‘When he starts a job, he gets confused, forgets and moves to a different job’

Sometimes, individuals with ADHD define their forgetfulness themselves, similar to their families.

‘When I try to listen to the lecture, I can’t hold back what the teacher said for a long time’

‘Sometimes, when the other person talks for a long time, if I don’t interrupt, I forget my answer’

Studies show that these problems are caused by working memory (instantaneous memory) and attention. Process memory is most likened to ‘RAM’ in computers. In this type of instant memory, information from the outside world (sounds, images, events) and permanent memory (our memories, what we know) are brought together flexibly.

For example, in the paragraph question, while trying to keep in mind what the child has read, it is tried to find the right answer by synthesizing it with the past knowledge. This is a difficult task for the mind. In this complex process, the fact that our instant memory (working memory) does not work correctly will cause the information to be forgotten and the answer cannot be reached. Studies have shown that individuals with ADHD make frequent mistakes in such difficult tasks and frequently experience working memory problems.

Similarly, writing a short story or paragraph is among the tasks that tire our mental resources. It is a very complex and heavy mental burden to find the main topic, to introduce the topic, to determine a course as a result, to make examples and to choose the style while writing. It requires the attention, memory, and wakefulness systems to work very hard in collaboration. Failure and avoidance in these difficult mental tasks are frequently encountered findings in children with ADHD.

In summary, forgetfulness is an important finding that is frequently encountered in children and adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder during difficult mental processes such as reading and writing, and sometimes during simple tasks in daily life.
