Emotion Management Problems in Attention Deficit:

Managing our emotions is an important and critical mental function in our daily lives. We display our emotions, like our behaviors, by pre-checking and delaying them. Although problems in emotion management are not among the diagnostic criteria of attention deficit, they are among the most common problems in practice.

Studies have shown that they mostly experience two types of problems in the field of emotion management.

Low response threshold

A proportionally LARGER response to a minor problem or situation.

Individuals with attention deficits tend to react emotionally to minor problems they encounter immediately (low response threshold) and their reactions are often intense and severe compared to the problem. In our daily life, we all face many problems and problems. We try to ignore many small problems and manage our emotions in order to conserve our energy and happiness. We manage to do it, except for some moments when it all comes together. Individuals with ADHD, on the other hand, focus on the problems in their thought systems, and often feel momentary and short-term emotional tension and restlessness. They seem to be locked in the moment of the problem. They describe that ‘moment’ as if they couldn’t think of anything or control themselves. Sometimes these states of tension can also be reflected in their behavior. They act as if they are reflexively reacting emotionally without thinking. For example, they often quarrel in daily life, often clash with their siblings over minor problems. Instead of providing social harmony in friendships, they often show reactions such as getting offended and breaking the game. Most of the time, they calm down quickly and apologize for what they did.

In a group of individuals with ADHD, emotion management problems manifest themselves as a constant feeling of emptiness and boredom instead of being quick to anger or anger. Individuals with this problem seem to be in a constant emptiness, only to get rid of their negative emotions during fun or exciting activities. Their mood improves when they interact with their friends or loved ones (the risk of developing depression is higher in this group).

In addition, emotion management problems negatively affect motivation and arousal systems, which are closely related to each other. Sometimes, the emotions we feel because of the problems we experience or the injustices we suffer cause us to be unmotivated. When we understand that giving instant reactions will be harmful and will not change the situation, we choose to take action and be motivated in the long run to cope with the problem. In this way, we use the negative emotion created by the problems for development and progress. This response supports our ability to initiate and maintain goal-directed behaviors. No one will try to change and improve things in a world where they are very happy.

As a result, individuals with ADHD experience emotional management problems more frequently and intensely, similar to problems in attention and behavior management. However, it should not be forgotten that for every child or adult who has anger problems or depressed mood, the only source of the problem is not attention deficit.
