The psychopathology of everyday life – sigmund freud

Freud has a deterministic point of view (everything happens for a reason) and examines the details that we see as simple in our daily life are actually not as simple as we think. Freud believed that forgettings and slips “represent repressed, psychic material that is unwanted to be remembered, that although removed from consciousness, they still do not lack the capacity for self-expression.” He found it appropriate to call these thoughts “Parapraxia”. These can be in the form of repressed unconscious and motivated desires themselves slip of the tongue, forgetting the name, slip of the pencil.

Forgetting Proper Names: There must be an urge to forget a person’s name. This impulse is suppressed. That is, forgetting is forgotten because of an unpleasant impulse and because an event to which this impulse is connected will be reminded. Forgetting a name has the same meaning as forgetting it. The sexual desire shown to a particular woman can cause the person to forget their surname after marriage. The same is true for aggression we show to another. To explain the reason for the forgetting of names, Freud emphasizes that the process that should lead to the reproduction of lost names is displaced and thus remembered by a wrong name.

Forgetting Important Events: Again, this event will occur due to repression. Freud comes up with the example of being unable to remember a former patient. However, after thinking for a long time, he was able to find out who he was. The person died as a result of a misdiagnosis of his symptoms. This event was suppressed because it caused him uneasiness, and the person and event could hardly be remembered.

Slips of the tongue: The person says a different sentence than intended, but the suppressed unconscious element comes into the consciousness and slips of the tongue occur. Freud also states that a patient sometimes calls a particular person his aunt but calls his mother. In this way, these people can unconsciously identify with each other. This can cause slips. A woman in financial difficulties said to Freud, “Please don’t give me big pills because I can’t let them”, of course she actually meant “bill” here.

Pen Slips: A friend wrote a letter to a woman saying, “I hope you’re all well and unhappy,” because she doesn’t like the thought of being happy with someone else. He revealed his suppressed thought by writing you are unhappy instead of you are happy.

Items – Forgetting Objects; When a man misplaces his wedding ring repeatedly or when a woman forgets to wear her ring, it could be a sign that some marital problems are pressed.
