OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the factors that play a role in burnout by examining assistant doctors who receive specialization training in surgical and non-surgical branches in terms of burnout syndrome.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: A questionnaire questioning 38 different factors belonging to the Maslach Burnout Scale and sociodemographic characteristics was applied to a total of 165 residents, 85 of whom were non-surgical and 80 of whom were specializing in surgery, at İzmir Tepecik Training and Research Hospital. responses were evaluated statistically. Emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal accomplishment levels were evaluated in 3 groups as low, medium and high.

RESULTS: Although 75.3% of the internal medicine residents had high emotional exhaustion and 63.5% had a high level of depersonalization, only 11.8% had a low sense of personal accomplishment. Although 50% of the resident doctors in the surgical branches had high emotional exhaustion and 65% had a high level of depersonalization, only 8.8% had a low sense of personal accomplishment. It was found that those experiencing emotional burnout in internal branches were significantly higher than in surgical branches (p0.05).

CONCLUSION: It was determined that the rates of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization were high in resident physicians working in internal and surgical branches. Despite this, it was determined that the level of personal accomplishment did not decrease to the same extent yet. These data emphasize that necessary measures should be taken by the clinic and hospital management and the residents should be supported in this regard in order to reduce the burnout of all residents, especially in the areas where the work is done in our hospital.
