Summary

Objective: This study was planned to determine the frequency of depression and anxiety in active tuberculosis cases admitted to Batman Central Tuberculosis Dispensary. .

Materials and methods: Only active pulmonary tuberculosis cases were included in the study, extrapulmonary tuberculosis cases and relapse cases were not included in the study. A questionnaire prepared to determine the sociodemographic characteristics of the cases and the Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale were applied using face-to-face interview technique during the patients’ admission to the dispensary.

Results: The mean age of the 48 people who agreed to participate in the study was 29.73±15.68 (min:12-max:76), 52.1% (n:25) were men. Anxiety was found in 20.8 (n:10) and depression in 50.0% (n:24). Disease duration was longer than 2 months in 72.9% (n:35) of the participants, 1-2 months in 14.5% (n:7), and more than one month in 12.5% ​​(n:6). Depression was 48.0% (n:12) in men, 52.2% in women (n:12), anxiety was 16.0% in men (n:4) and 26.1% (n:6) in women (respectively p :0.773 and p:0.487).

Conclusion: We think that it is necessary to consider that depression and anxiety disorders may develop in these patients, due to the fact that the majority of patients followed up for tuberculosis in tuberculosis dispensaries are chronically ill.
