Here is the well-known calculation that we encounter very often and that almost all of us have done this calculation at least once, the body mass index calculation. It is very easy to calculate. It is the price we get when we divide our weight by the square of our height.
BMI = Body Load (kg) / [Height (m)2]
This value has the following feature that draws your attention: “BMI gives information about obesity. ” And of course, there are reference ranges for this and we accept the reference ranges determined by the World Health Organization.

While adults are based on the references in the above table, there is no definite classification in children and adolescents as in adults, but we use different approaches in defining overweight and obesity. One of the most used approaches is the use of percentile/z score values at the individual and social level.
Recently, I can say that calculating BMI has lost its interest and has been put in the background. Because it has been accepted that it is not enough to look at the expense of BMI alone in order to talk about obesity. Because the percentage of fat and muscle measured by the developed body analysis devices, even if the person has an ideal BMI, is higher than the required percentage, showing that the BMI assessment will lose its value and BMI alone will not be enough for the obesity risk factor. In this sense, we can say that BMI should not be used in growing children, pregnant women, athletes, the elderly, and patients with edema. In fact, BMI can cause misclassifications in very short and very tall individuals.
