Many studies have been conducted to date, examining the relationship between foods and diseases. As a result of these researches, the finalized information is that some substances in the products we consume protect us, while others make us vulnerable to diseases. In today’s article, we will talk about one of these studies, a study investigating the effects of spicy foods on our health. According to a study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) recently; Consumption of dark and regular spicy food can reduce the risk of loss of life due to many diseases, especially cancer.
Spices have been an indispensable part of our kitchens from the history of humanity to the present day. In addition to adding flavor to our food, it is also used in canning, fabric dyeing, and even make-up products. Nowadays, spicy foods come to the fore with their health benefits. Many studies have shown that spicy foods play a protective role against obesity and diabetes by reducing appetite. Again, as we mentioned in one of our previous articles; It has been determined that the substance called capsaicin in hot pepper may have a protective effect against colon cancer. Benefits to the digestive system, may be beneficial on cancer types, and antibacterial effects are other properties that have been investigated. These studies were based on general spicy eating habits rather than daily consumption. The research we will describe is the first to show the relationship between daily spicy food consumption and risk of death.
In a study conducted in China, where the use of spices is quite high; Information of about half a million people from 10 different parts of China was used. In this study, people were asked how often they consumed spicy food per week and what kind of spices they used in addition to those who consumed more than 3 times a week. According to the results of the research; It has been reported that those who consume spicy foods 3-7 days a week have less loss of life due to cancer, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases compared to those who consume less than once a week. It has also been stated that fresh products are more effective than dried ones.
As a result; Although these results are good news for spice lovers; It is too early to recommend spicy foods for your health. As a matter of fact, since the study is an observational study, it is not powerful enough. That’s why we should keep our diet regular in this regard and consume spicy foods in moderation.
