Pap smear test (cervical smear test)
Smear test is a test that has been used for many years to detect pre-cervical cancer conditions.
Thanks to the smear test, a significant reduction in the incidence of cervical cancer has been achieved. The probability of a significant discomfort in the following one-year period in a woman who has a systematic smear test is very low.
Smear test is the process of collecting cells from around the cervix using a small brush during the gynecologist examination and is a completely painless, non-irritating test. This sample is then spread on a microscope slide, fixed with alcohol and sent for examination. The presence of unusual cells is investigated in the smear examined by the pathologist.
Smear test is mostly started to be done in women over the age of 21 and after sexual intercourse has started, it is recommended to be done annually from these ages. If there are no unusual results in 2-3 consecutive examinations, or if there is no problem when performed together with the HPV test, this frequency can be reduced compared to the guidelines with the recommendation of your physician. Thanks to the systematic annual smear test, the disease can be detected early.
Smear test can be done more frequently in smokers, those who have had their first sexual interest under the age of 18, those who have sexual relations with more than one man, and those who are positive in HPV tests and have cervical cancer risks.
If unusual cells are detected in the results of the smear test, 3-6 months follow-up in mild cases, repeat smear in more important cases, and even colposcopic examination and biopsy are recommended. With this method, the cervix is evaluated with a microscope, and if necessary, a cut is taken and sent to pathology. Sometimes, an examination can be made to determine whether there are papillomaviruses (HPV) that can cause cancer. According to the results of the examination, freezing (cryotherapy), burning (cautery), laser or surgical removal of that area are planned.
What is the connection between cervical wound and cancer?
Cervical cancer is a disease that develops over many years.
The time period from the occurrence of atypical development, that is, the pre-cancerous condition, to the formation of cancer from these scar tissue may take 10 years or more. If the cancer precursor can be caught at the lesion stage, the probability of the disease to result in a cure is quite high, sometimes without requiring a surgical process. Therefore, early diagnosis and effective treatment are very valuable.
How is cervical wound treatment done? Cryotherapy, LEEP, Laser
After the necessary examinations are completed in the treatment of cervical wound and depending on the level of the disease, some international standards and procedures such as burning the wound (cauterization), freezing (cryotherapy) and laser, LEEP conization will be decided by the physician. and operation is used if necessary.
In electrocautery, the damaged tissue is burned using electricity, the process is mostly painless, the beautification process may take 2-3 months.
In the treatment formula with cryo (freezing) in the cervical wound, the area is frozen with nitrous oxide gas, the cryotherapy process is painless, the beautification process may take 2-3 months. In some cases, it is more preferred in terms of its effect, comfort, patient comfort and accessible area.
In laser, the process is painless but valuable, and the process success is like the others.

What are the symptoms of cervical cancer? How is the diagnosis made? Treatment?
Cervical cancer does not always show symptoms at the beginning, unsystematic, odorous vaginal bleeding can be seen. If there is a tumoral structure in the vaginal examination, the diagnosis is suspected and a biopsy is taken.
Radiologically, the size of the tumor, its anterior urinary bladder, posterior breech connection, and the spread of the tumor to the sides of the cervix are evaluated with MRI. Routine smear follow-ups are required for early diagnosis in the detection of cervical cancer, colposcopy and biopsy are required in women with suspicious smear results. Since HPV is considered as a factor, HPV DNA determination can also be made. Generally, early-stage cervical cancer is treated with surgery. When cancer spreads to the sides of the cervix, radiotherapy is the first treatment option instead of surgery.
