According to the study published in the British Medical Journal, not only diabetes but also prediabetes is a risk factor for pancreatic cancer.
Pancreatic cancer is one of the most serious types of cancer, where satisfactory results cannot be obtained, and it causes approximately 227,000 deaths in the world every year. The biggest reason for this; When the cancer is diagnosed, it is usually advanced to an inoperable level. For this reason, it is especially important to prevent pancreatic cancer and to determine the risk factors that are effective in the development of the disease.
With clinical studies; Type 2 diabetes has been identified as a risk factor for pancreatic cancer. The underlying reason for this is; It has been shown that blood sugar and insulin hormone levels are high, and it has been stated that these may increase the ability of pancreatic cells to multiply and spread. However, the relationship between prediabetes (not diabetes, but borderline=fasting blood glucose 100-126 mg/dl) and even lower blood glucose values with pancreatic cancer is also extremely important. Because about 7% of the world’s population (350 million people) is prediabetic and if prediabetes is associated with pancreatic cancer, it is possible to reverse this situation and significantly reduce pancreatic cancer rates with some lifestyle changes (weight loss, healthy diet, exercise). Therefore, in a study published recently; The relationship between blood glucose values and pancreatic cancer risk was evaluated.
This study; This is a study conducted by compiling and analyzing the data of 2408 pancreatic cancer patients belonging to 9 different studies published in recent years on this subject. In the study, the relationship between the blood glucose values of the patients and the risk of developing pancreatic cancer was evaluated and it was seen that every 10 mg/dl increase in fasting blood glucose was associated with a 14% increase in the risk of pancreatic cancer. In other words, it has been determined that prediabetes is a risk factor for pancreatic cancer.
As a result; According to this study, there is a possibility that not only diabetes but also prediabetes is a risk factor for pancreatic cancer. This presents an important opportunity for the prevention of pancreatic cancer. Because while diabetes is a risk factor that cannot be ruled out, prediabetes is a condition that can be reversed with some lifestyle changes (healthy diet, weight loss, exercise).
