Fibroids, which are very common in women, are also called “benign tumors” among the people. Fibroids are the name given to abnormal tissues that occur in the uterine region, mainly during the reproductive period of women. Intrauterine fibroids, which can manifest with symptoms such as severe pain, menstrual irregularities, and frequent urination, can cause different results from infertility to removal of the uterus. Myomas, which are most frequently treated with surgical operations among gynecological diseases, can be successfully treated by gynecologists and obstetricians with closed surgeries today.
From the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Yeni Yüzyıl University Gaziosmanpaşa Hospital, Dr. Cover. Member Kübra Bağcı answered the questions about ‘myomas’
1. What is myoma?
Fibroids are benign tumors that develop from the muscle layer of the uterus, commonly known as ‘ur’. It is seen in one out of every four women aged 18-45.
2.Fibroids are more common in whom?
There is a genetic predisposition in fibroids; It is more likely to occur in women whose mother or sister has fibroids. It is more common in women with a high body mass index, those who have their first menstruation at an early age, and women who have never given birth.
3. What are the symptoms of myoma?
Most patients do not have any complaints and are detected during routine examination. The symptom of fibroids depends on the location and size of the fibroid in the uterus. It often manifests itself with inguinal pain, frequent and excessive menstrual bleeding, anemia. In addition, if the fibroids have affected the neighboring organs with the pressure they have created, they may cause frequent urination, urinary incontinence or constipation. Pain during sexual intercourse significantly affects the sexual life of couples.
4.Do fibroids cause infertility?
Fibroids located in the uterus cause infertility and recurrent miscarriages by disrupting the inner wall of the uterus. If a woman with fibroids is pregnant, the fibroid may grow during pregnancy, and the baby may experience developmental delay and premature birth.
5.Do fibroids turn into cancer?
Although fibroids are benign tumors, there is a chance of 2 to 5 in 1000 to turn into cancer. As the patient’s age increases, the likelihood of developing cancer also increases. Non-operated fibroids should be followed up with controls at intervals of 3 to 6 months.
6. Which tests are used to diagnose fibroids?
During the examination, the diagnosis of myoma can be made by ultrasound. Sometimes MR imaging is required to fully assess the location and size of the fibroid.
7. How are fibroids treated?
Although there are drug treatments to close the vessels feeding the fibroid, relieve symptoms such as bleeding and pain, or reduce the size of the fibroids, the most definitive treatment for fibroids is surgery.
8.Is it possible to protect the uterus during myoma surgery?
Two types of surgery are performed for the treatment of fibroids. The first option is to remove the fibroids while preserving the uterus, and the second option is to remove the uterus. The type of surgery to be chosen varies according to parameters such as the age of the patient, the demand for children or the number of children. After evaluating the patients individually, treatment options should be determined.
