The person who will use it should be discouraged by explaining the harms…
Fireworks, one of the most widely used entertainment tools today, cause significant damage to the environment, human and animal health at the time of explosion. Experts, who stated that fireworks, which are also on the agenda with their intense use in New Year’s Eve celebrations, disrupt personal peace in case of prolonged or sudden exposure, state that they increase stress in humans and other living things, especially birds. Dr. Ahmet Adiller recommends that people who will use fireworks for recreational purposes, which carry a deadly risk for birds and create a warning effect in neurological diseases such as epilepsy, should be discouraged from their decisions by explaining the harm.
Üsküdar University Vocational School of Health Services Environmental Health Program Instructor Member Ahmet Adiller, lastly, made evaluations about the harms of fireworks, which are frequently used in New Year’s celebrations, to the environment, animal and human health.
Fireworks pose a health risk
Stating that fireworks are unfortunately one of the most common entertainment tools in our lives for a long time, Dr. Ahmet Adiller said, “An entertainment that lasts for a few minutes has many harms to people, nature and natural life. Since fireworks are produced by chemical methods, they contain compounds of toxic substances such as lead, although not in high amounts. With the detonation of fireworks, some of these chemicals are dispersed on the surface and some in the air. The air polluting effects of these gases and dusts contribute to regional air pollution. In addition, noise and light also pose some health risks.” said.
It can create a stimulant effect for epilepsy
Stating that noise is already a type of environmental pollution, Dr. Ahmet Adiller said, “Fireworks have psychological effects such as disturbing personal peace and increasing the stress level, especially in cases of prolonged or sudden exposure, as well as many physiological effects. When we come to the light part, it can create a stimulating effect in neurological diseases such as epilepsy. So we can actually say that fireworks affect both the environment, animals and public health.” he said.
It poses a deadly risk to birds.
Dr. Ahmet Adiller emphasized that air is an important part of the natural habitat of birds and continued his words as follows:
“Although there are not many birds in the air in their natural habitats at night, some of the birds can be in the air at night with the effect of city lighting. Birds in the air in the area can be directly harmed by the explosion of fireworks. The sound and noise caused by fireworks cause an increase in stress levels in many living things, especially birds. As a result, many creatures can hit and injure themselves or even die during their escape. Birds on the surface, especially in wetlands, take off because of the sound and light caused by fireworks, even if they are detonated at a very long distance. Since most birds do not have very high night vision abilities, this can result in disability and death for these creatures. Birds that are in the incubation period may leave their nests and young and may not return to their nests again. This can often result in the death of the offspring. Apart from this, even if the birds in the area where the explosion took place are not killed or injured, they are exposed to the gases and dusts generated by the explosion at serious levels. This increases their chances of experiencing chronic health problems.”
Carbon emissions are the main cause of climate change.
Expressing that air pollution is one of the important environmental pollutions today, Dr. Ahmet Adiller said, “Both the increase in carbon emissions and other pollutants directly or indirectly affect the environment and therefore people. Carbon emissions are the main cause of global warming and climate change. The change of the climate system has many negative effects on the environment, from agricultural production to water resources, from events such as floods and overflows to natural life. In addition to this climatic effect, pollutants in the air both damage the living things in the environment through respiration, and continue their harmful effects in these environments by passing through water and soil. said.
Social awareness is increasing
Dr. Ahmet Adiller said that the signature campaigns organized on this subject are the biggest indicator of the increase in our level of social awareness and concluded his words as follows:
“Although most of these petitions do not reach their main purpose, they leave an impact on the people they reach. This effect leads to an increase in the level of social awareness. Although we, as a people, cannot directly prevent the use of fireworks, especially in big celebrations, showing our stance on the issue and not participating in such events may actually lead to our reaction being understood and yielded results over time. Apart from this, the point that we can directly affect is to prevent individual use. Unfortunately, fireworks are also frequently used in events such as weddings, birthdays and opening ceremonies. At this point, talking about the harms of the use of fireworks to those who organize such events around us and discouraging them from these decisions may enable us to have a more direct impact.”
