The first living donor liver transplant was performed at SANKO University Hospital. Ramazan Karahan (42) living in Gaziantep gave hope to his father Mahmut Karahan (72) by giving a piece of his liver to his father, Mahmut Karahan (72), in a successful operation performed by the SANKO University Hospital Organ Transplantation Center (transplANTEPSANKO).
Father Mahmut Karahan and his son Ramazan Karahan, who regained their health after a successful liver transplant at SANKO University Hospital, expressed their happiness at the press conference held with their doctors.
Rector Prof. Dr. Güner Dağlı, in his speech at the meeting, stated that SANKO University Hospital provides important services for both the region and Gaziantep, and said that they experience the happiness of being able to discharge their patients in a healthy way after successful transplantation.
Explaining that they will give better news soon, Prof. Dr. Dağlı said, “We have also completed our preparations for bone marrow transplantation. I guess we will give her good news soon, but our red apple is heart and lung transplant. We have work on this longer term, but we need a little more time,” he said.
WE DISCHARGED OUR LIVER RECEIVER AND TRANSFERENT HEALTHY
Department of General Surgery Lecturer. Member / Organ Transplantation Center Responsible Physician Assoc. Dr. Yücel Yüksel stated that the patient Mahmut Karahan applied to SANKO University Hospital with a picture of impaired consciousness due to end-stage liver failure, and that they started preparations for liver transplantation after his general condition improved.
Stating that the patient’s son Ramazan Karahan volunteered to donate his liver, Assoc. Dr. Yüksel summarized the process as follows:
“In the evaluations we made before the transplant, there was no obstacle to the transplant. Both our recipient and donor were operated at the same time. We took about 60 percent of Ramazan brain’s liver and transplanted it to his father. The liver is an organ that renews itself. The operation took seven hours. We went slow as it was our first surgery.
After the operation, we discharged our first live liver transplant recipient and donor patient, healthy and happy, with the close follow-up and interest of the team of Gastroenterology, Intensive Care, Radiology and Nephrology Specialists.”
After coming to Gaziantep, Assoc. Dr. Yuksel said:
“Liver transplantation is one of the most difficult operations of organ transplantation. When I had a liver transplant, I felt like Messi who had won the world cup. In organ transplant surgeries, surgeons are at the forefront. But surgeons are just the tip of the iceberg. SANKO University, Hospital and SANKO management are the architects of this success.
Liver transplantation in our hospital is very important for Gaziantep and the region. Liver and kidney transplants go through long and arduous processes. Patients have to apply to nearby centers within the first year. The closer they are to where they live, the more regular their treatment and follow-up will be. Hopefully, we want to help our patients and society with our more successful and better works.”
LIVER TRANSPLANT IS THE ONLY TREATMENT FOR LIVER FAILURE
Assoc. Dr. Nimet Yılmaz also pointed out that liver transplantation is the only treatment for liver failure and means replacing the sick liver with a healthy liver.
Pointing out that some hereditary diseases, viral hepatitis, biliary tract diseases, excessive alcohol and drug use can cause irreversible damage to the liver and result in acute or chronic liver failure, Assoc. Dr. Yılmaz emphasized that cirrhosis is the most common liver transplant disease in the world.
Explaining that there are methods to determine the recovery or transplant needs of patients in case of liver failure, Assoc. Dr. Yilmaz; “We inform our patients by calculating whether it’s time for transplantation by using these methods in our hospital,” he said.
Assoc. Dr. Emphasizing that living donor liver transplantation has been a hope for patients all over the world since 1997, Yılmaz continued as follows:
“The most important advantage of living donor liver transplantation is that it allows the recipient to be transplanted when needed. Patients can be transferred from a cadaver without waiting for their turn on the transplant list.
Since the rate of organ donation in our country is extremely low, the general condition of most patients waiting on the list worsens while waiting in line, which can cause early postoperative complications, and some patients even die while waiting in line.
It is very important to perform the liver transplant surgery at the right time without delay and to have a good general condition during the transplant in order to achieve good results. There is a success rate of over 90 percent in liver transplants performed on time before the general condition of the patient worsens. Our patient clings to life again with the liver donated by his son.”
WE EXPERIENCE THE HAPPINESS OF SUCCESSFUL LIVER TRANSPLANTATION
Assoc. Dr. Mehtap Akdoğan, on the other hand, stated that they are happy to show their success in organ transplantation for a long time, as well as in liver transplantation.
Assoc. Dr. Akdogan commented:
“There is no age-related problem in organ transplantation. We can help patients who apply to us for liver transplantation. Our hospital has this infrastructure. We can evaluate the patients and transfer them. We would like to thank the esteemed Konukoğlu Family, the university and hospital management for giving us this opportunity.”
Faculty of Medicine, Department of General Surgery and Organ Transplant Center General Surgery Specialist. Instructor Kenan Demirbakan, a member of the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation, Dr. Instructor Yunus Baydilek from the Department of Radiology, Dr. Instructor Member Zeynep Şahyazıcı Sarı and SANKO University Hospital Organ Transplant Center Coordinator Ayşe Bozkurt expressed that they are proud of performing a successful liver transplant as a team.
I HAVE BEEN DIFFICULT TO WALK ALONE FOR A YEAR AND A half
Retired machinist, married and father of six children, 72-year-old Mahmut Karahan said that he was diagnosed with cirrhosis in the state hospital he went to two years ago when he got sick.
Karahan said, “I was diagnosed with cirrhosis, but I did not pay much attention to it. However, I had an unfortunate accident by falling from a tree while collecting peanuts. In the state hospital I went to, I was told that I had liver failure and that I should definitely not have a transplant.
Explaining that he had difficulty even walking alone for more than a year, Karahan continued his words as follows:
“I was saddened when I found out about my liver condition. The transplant situation scared me. My family started researching where to transplant for me. When we learned that successful transplantations were performed at SANKO University Hospital, we applied for liver transplantation.
At first, I had reservations about the surgery, but I decided to have a transplant, inspired by the trust given to me by our SANKO University Hospital Organ Transplant Center physicians. I am very happy to be transferred. They said you couldn’t get up in five months, but my doctors got me up in 25 days. The biggest loss is being late. If your doctors say you will have a transplant, you will, but you must be in good hands.
My son wanted to be my liver donor. When he learned that there was no problem as a result of the examinations, the transplant was performed. After a successful surgery, I started walking alone. I got rid of the pain that I had suffered for a year and a half. I feel good even shortly after the surgery. Hopefully, with the help of my doctors, I will feel better over time. Many thanks to my son. May Allah be pleased with our doctors and all hospital staff.
WE HAVE THE FIRST LIVE DONOR LIVER TRANSPLANT
Ramazan Karahan, a 42-year-old civil servant and father of two, reminded that his father had difficulty even walking alone due to the health problems he had been experiencing for two years.
Ramazan Karahan, who stated that he was told that my father needed a liver transplant to regain his health, shared his feelings as follows:
“We started researching where to get the liver transplant. While considering the evaluation of nearby provinces, we came to the information that liver transplantation can be performed at SANKO University Hospital. We had reservations as we were the first living liver transplant candidates. However, we decided to transplant with the approach of our physicians and the confidence they gave us. While I was thinking about who might be close to us, the job fell to me. I have experienced how precious human life is and how important organ transplantation is.
As a son, I could never let my father disappear in plain sight. It was a very successful surgery. I had a very fast recovery process. Thank you to all our teachers. It is a very important service that this service comes to Gaziantep. Giving life to a person is very important, very valuable.
My father could not walk without support for a year and a half. Shortly after the operation, he started walking alone. We witnessed the interest in SANKO University Hospital and the efforts of all staff, especially physicians. A large team was organized to heal my father. I would like to thank our teachers and all the SANKO Family.”
