HISTORY OF ACUPUNCTURE

After the end of the 1911 monarchy period in China, acupuncture began to spread more. After 1944, the spread of acupuncture gained momentum with the Chinese President Mao Zedong’s giving importance to this issue. Acupuncture was started to be practiced in an international hospital for the first time in China in 1945. Since 1948, it has been given formal training.

Acupuncture has been approved and supported by WHO (World Health Organization) since 1970.

American President Richard Nixon visited China for the first time in 1972. During the trip, one of the American journalists suffered from appendicitis and the appendectomy was performed painlessly under acupuncture anesthesia without any general anesthesia. Seeing this, American scientists began to be very closely interested and trained in acupuncture from this date on.

In 1998, America’s NIH (National Institute of Health=National Health Organization) declared that acupuncture can be used in the treatment of many diseases and is very effective.

When we look at the European countries, the first country interested in acupuncture was France during the Second World War (1945).

In 1957 in France, Dr. Nogier developed auriculotherapy, arguing that the ear is in the form of an inverted homunculus and that all body points are present in the ear. In the same period, Sir Henry Head tried to explain acupuncture with his theories. In addition, Felix Mann made serious contributions to the spread of acupuncture with the acupuncture books he wrote.

ACUPUNCTURE IN TURKEY

Acupuncture has been applied in many medical faculties around the world for the last 40 years. Acupuncture In our country, Acupuncture treatment regulation dated 29.5.1991 and numbered 20885 was published in order to regulate the principles and procedures of acupuncture treatment, as in other treatment methods, with scientific methods. Thus, for the first time on 29 May 1991, it was officially accepted as a scientific treatment method, not an alternative, by the Ministry of Health.

Today, acupuncture is applied in many Medical Faculty hospitals, especially in state hospitals in our country. The Ministry of Health published the ‘Regulation on the Amendment of the Acupuncture Treatment Regulation’ with the number 24694 dated March 13, 2002 and made regulations in the direction of Acupuncture.

After the Acupuncture regulation published in 1991, Acupuncture certificate training was given for the first time in 1994 by Acupuncture associations in Trakya University Edirne Faculty of Medicine. These trainings continued to be given by acupuncture associations in the form of courses, symposiums and congresses. Acupuncture training, which was started to be given by Gazi University Faculty of Medicine in 2002 with the permission of the Ministry of Health, is still being given by various universities.
