The fact that the cause of many diseases is related to the penetration of harmful chemicals in food through small cracks in the intestines, turned their attention to dishwasher detergents. So how do dishwasher detergents affect the immune system?
Member of the Turkish National Allergy and Clinical Immunology Association. Özge Atay, “In a study conducted in Switzerland, the effects of chemicals in dishwasher detergents on our immune system were examined and showed that alcohol ethoxylates in rinse aids, if they reach the intestines without adequate rinsing, will cause significant problems in the immune system. These diseases include inflammatory bowel diseases, digestive problems, metabolic syndrome, obesity, allergic diseases and even cancer.”
Dishwashers, which we use to clean dishes, have been used frequently in homes, cafeterias, cafes and restaurants for many years, both industrial and household type, and undoubtedly make our lives much easier. However, due to the fact that the harms of detergents and rinse aid used in dishwashers to our health have been on the agenda recently, the question marks that arose in the minds also prompted the experts. Member of the Turkish National Allergy and Clinical Immunology Association. Özge Atay, with the explanation of the importance of the intestines in our immune system, warned that many chronic diseases are related to harmful chemicals entering through small cracks in the intestines, and that their eyes are on dishwasher detergents.
“Detergent residues cause damage to epithelial cells that prevent viruses and bacteria from entering the body”
Turkish Scientist Prof., who broke new ground in the world of science with the epithelial barrier hypothesis. Dr. Referring to the research carried out by Cezmi Akdiş and his friends in Switzerland, Atay said that the effects of chemicals in dishwasher detergents on our immune system were examined. Stating that they have shown that alcohol ethoxylates in the polishes reach the intestines without rinsing sufficiently, Atay said, “If the detergent and polisher residues are not completely removed after drying, they can remain on the surface of the dishes and these can cause inflammatory bowel diseases such as colitis ulcerosa, metabolic syndrome, obesity, They revealed that it can cause allergic diseases and even cancer development, and most importantly, it can harm the ecosystem. In addition, it has been reported that detergent or rinse aid residues cause different system diseases by causing damage to epithelial cells, which act as a protective barrier and prevent viruses and bacteria from entering the body.
“Especially affects the digestive system negatively”
Explaining that the harmful effects of dishwashing detergents were evaluated under laboratory conditions, Özge Atay said that as a result of the study, the culprit component that disrupts the barrier integrity is alcohol ethoxylates, and that this substance is a non-ionic surfactant widely used in detergents and especially in polishers. Stating that other components such as citric acid and sodium cumenesulfonate do not affect the barrier integrity of epithelial cells, Atay said that if the allowable rate for alcohol ethoxylate is different, this substance causes many gene and protein damage, especially affecting the digestive system.
“Chemicals should be regulated in accordance with human health”
Underlining the importance of arranging the chemicals in the rinse aid and detergents in accordance with human health and inspecting them by authorized institutions, Atay said, “Especially in individual uses, in order to minimize the possible detergent and rinse aid residues with additional rinsing, to use the machines in accordance with the user manual and to purify the detergent residues, the machines should be cleaned at regular intervals. cleaning and choosing natural products will be beneficial.”
