When the patient notices the symptoms of hypoglycemia, he can prevent hypoglycemia by eating something, a glass of fruit juice or 2-3 sugar cubes. In cases where the symptoms do not improve within 5-10 minutes, the treatment can be repeated.

Symptoms of hypoglycemia;

• Sweating
• Feeling of hunger
• Dizziness, irritability, palpitation
• Lip numbness
• Visual impairment
• Pallor
• Fatigue, faintness

In some patients, the hypo is severe and the patient loses consciousness without being aware of his condition. These people need the help of their relatives.
• The blood glucose level is usually below 40 mg/dl. In such a situation, nothing should be given by mouth to the patient.
• If the patient is nearby, a subcutaneous glucagon injection should be made.
• After the patient’s condition improves, 30 g of a slowly absorbed carbohydrate (an apple or a slice of bread) should be given.
• If the patient’s condition does not improve within 5-10 minutes, he should be referred to the hospital immediately.
• The blood glucose level should be measured in these patients and they should be taken to the hospital immediately and glucose given intravenously.

Signs and symptoms;

• Intense feeling of thirst
• Excessive drinking
• Excessive urination
• Binge eating
• Fatigue and weight loss
• Visual impairment

What Should Be on the Travel List?

• An extra week’s supply of insulin, syringes or insulin pen and other medications.
• An extra week of blood glucose and urine ketone test strips.
• Your doctor’s prescription.
• Your diabetes diary.
• Foods that you can easily carry with you, such as cheese, crackers, and sugar cubes.
• Glucagon (for use in the treatment of severe hypoglycemia)
