Hypospadias, also known as the sunnah of the prophet among the people, is a developmental disorder of the penis. In hypospadias, the external urethra is not at the tip of the penis, but lower.
Hypospadias is classified according to the location of the external urethra.
Simple/Distal: It is a mild problem at the tip of the penis. It is common.
Intermediate/Medium: The external urine hole is somewhere in the middle of the penis
Heavy/ Proximal: It is a hole close to the bag or even in the bag.
Diagnosis is usually made at birth. The diagnosis of the disease is made according to the fact that the external urinary hole is not in its normal place, narrow or wide, curvature in the penis, and the size of the penis. Since it is an anomaly of the urogenital system, anomalies associated with hypospadias can also be identified during the first examination. Up to 10% of these cases may have undescended testis and inguinal hernia. In severe hypospadias cases, if the testicles are not palpable either unilaterally or bilaterally, pediatric endocrinology examination is absolutely necessary after delivery.
Treatment
The age at which surgery is planned for simple hypospadias is usually between 6-18 months. However, evaluation of patients with hypospadias at the time of diagnosis is important for preoperative treatments that may be required, especially in cases with severe hypospadias.
The main treatment goal in hypospadias is the functional and aesthetic correction of the penis. Although the early period of 7-10 days after the operation is as important as the operation, it is important in the long-term follow-up of 6-12 months after it. Families should also be informed about the problems that may develop after the surgery and long-term follow-up.
