We all have a backache from time to time, sometimes it goes away on its own even if we do nothing, sometimes it becomes unbearable, we cannot relax no matter what we do. In such cases, we do not know what to do and where to turn. I have prepared a guide that will shed light on what to do in such situations. Hopefully it benefits your business.
If you just have a backache:
If you’re in a good mood, lie down or sit down immediately. If you lie down, lie on your side, pull your feet towards your stomach, make sure to cover your waist. If you have someone at home to help you, put a hot water bag or a heated towel on your waist and drink a simple pain reliever at home.
If you are at work, try to sit down and stretch your legs forward. Make sure that there is no distance between your waist and the seat you are sitting in. If you don’t have a pillow, roll up a sweater or a blanket and put it around your waist.
If the pain occurred while working, if you can neither lie down nor sit, put your hands in the middle of your waist and bend your back as much as possible, then bend forward. If possible, wrap a sweater around your waist, take a simple pain reliever if possible. Keep working, but don’t stay in the same spot, stay active.
If you have the opportunity, it is also helpful to take a bath filled with hot water and apply pain-relieving ointments on your lower back when you return home.
If your pain is relieved by these methods, it’s okay, you have muscle stiffness.
But if the pain persists for more than three days despite the measures you take, you should definitely consult a doctor dealing with low back pain.
If the pain radiates from your lower back to your leg
If the pain radiates to the leg, it means that there is pressure on one of the nerves going from the waist to the leg. This pressure may be due to a herniated disc, or it may be due to the joints at the back of the spine entering an unformed position. In such a situation, even if you are working, you need to take leave and rest. Resting should be done by lying on the side, pulling the legs to the abdomen, putting a pillow or a quilt between the legs, and the waist should be covered.
If the pain is relieved the next day with rest, rest should be continued for at least three days.
But if you wake up the next day with the same intensity of pain despite resting, or if the pain has increased, you should definitely consult a doctor who deals with low back pain.
The pain spreads to your leg, if you also have numbness
If the pain in the leg continues with the numbness, it means too much pressure on the nerve, you should consult a doctor as soon as possible.
Let’s say your pain did not go away, you applied to the doctor
Doctors dealing with low back pain are neurosurgeons, physical therapists, orthopedists. But if you cannot reach a specialist, you can also apply to family physicians. Your doctor will examine you, if he thinks only of muscle pain, he can start treatment without any examination. However, if there is numbness, loss of strength, or gait disturbance, MRI should be requested. There is no point in taking a plain film unless the pain is caused by a fall or an accident. Tomography is meaningless unless there is a trauma.
MR examination is harmless as it does not contain radiation, and it provides great convenience in making the diagnosis since it shows both bones and soft tissues. No matter how often it is pulled, it is not a problem, it is just not suitable for those with a metal part in their body and a battery in their heart.
MRI was taken, only a tightness in your muscles or a problem in your joints
In addition to simple painkillers, manual muscle relaxation method called manual therapy, massage therapy or physical therapy should be applied. If only medication is used, the pain will decrease, but it will recur at the first opportunity. For a permanent solution, if there is an opportunity, it would be appropriate to find people who have applied the treatment called chiropractic, which is very common especially in America and France, or manual therapy in our country, and surrender yourself to their skillful hands. If you cannot find these people, it would be beneficial to have physical therapy.
MRI done, you have a hernia that does not require surgery
If you only have pain and/or numbness, surgery is not needed, but it is necessary to remove the hernia before it grows. The most effective method for this is to pull the waist slowly with the help of a computer and replace the hernia. The most advanced and effective method in this regard is the method called antalgic trak, which is similar to a massage chair and slowly pulls the spine and puts the hernia in place. If it is difficult to reach the antalgic traction device, other waist pulling devices, physical therapy methods will benefit you.
If you have severe pain or a large hernia, it would be best to have a pain reliever and edema solution method called epidural injection applied. After the pain is relieved, the treatment becomes easier and more effective.
It would be much more beneficial for you to use all these advanced methods together. In other words, if you had an injection in your waist, you applied chiropractic and antalgic trak methods together, you will get a much quicker and more effective response.
MRI was taken, you have a hernia that requires surgery
For a hernia to require surgery, a part of the hernia must be seen to rupture or the patient must have loss of strength, or it must be determined that you have difficulty walking. In addition, night waking pain may also require surgery. If the decision to have surgery is made, you must do a good research. Although technology has advanced a lot, damage to the spinal cord or nerves is very difficult to reverse.
When choosing the physician who performs the surgery, you should research well and consider the experience and success level. Remember, the physician who does everything does not mean that he is good in that regard, the physician who performs a large number of lumbar hernia surgeries, successfully and especially deals with lumbar hernia is much more acceptable.
MRI was taken, you have a slip in your waist
If it is seen that there is a slip in your back, that is, the two vertebrae carrying you are not overlapping, your doctor should have you taken an additional film, this is called “dynamic lumbar graphy”. . If the slip is mobile, you need to have surgery, because every movement causes a blow to the spinal cord due to this slippage.
If it’s sedentary, it’s your walking distance that matters. If you need to stop and rest every 200-300 meters, you should have surgery, but if you can walk for miles, you can use methods such as antalgic trache, chiropractic, and physical therapy.
If surgery is required due to a slip on your waist, a screw should be placed on your waist. These screw surgeries are unfortunately the most feared surgeries, they can turn into a disaster for the patient in inexperienced or inexperienced hands. Fortunately, these surgeries can be successfully performed by experienced hands thanks to the developing technology. In this regard, one should be very, very careful when choosing a doctor.
MRI was taken, you have tightness in your back
The way to decide for tightness in the waist is your walking distance. If you have to stop frequently while walking, you may need surgery. If you are walking a long distance comfortably, this narrowness can be opened by pulling your waist with traction methods such as antalgic trache.
If there is one or two levels of stenosis that you need to have surgery for, if there is no slippage in your waist, this stenosis can be removed under the microscope with a method similar to the TUR method, where dentists carve the tooth. If the stenosis is at a distance of three or more, or if the slip accompanies the stenosis, it is useful to install a screw at the waist.
When choosing a doctor
Remember, low back problems can be treated very easily if they are caught in the beginning, but the treatment becomes more difficult as you wait, damage to the spinal cord and nerves. You need to be very careful, very careful, and research thoroughly when choosing the doctor you will be treated and operated on if necessary.
