ADHD, like all medical diseases, is a disorder that responds very well to early diagnosis and treatment. However, if left untreated, it can lead to serious medical, academic and social problems.

There are 3 types

1- Attention Deficit type

2- Hyperactivity – Impulsivity type

3- Attention deficit and hyperactivity coexisting type

ADHD CAUSES ?

Although it was thought that wrong parental attitudes caused ADHD, researches show that ADHD is a neurobiological disease. Researches especially emphasize that there is a problem related to the functioning and metabolism of the frontal lobe of the brain.

Although the exact cause of ADHD is not known, genetic factors are more emphasized. In family studies, parents of children with ADHD have ADHD 2-8 times more than the general population (Biederman- Faraone 2002).

However, there are studies on infections and drug use during pregnancy, prolonged birth history, low birth weight, alcohol and cigarette use during pregnancy increase the risk of ADHD in the child. In addition, it has been reported that high lead levels can cause ADHD-like pictures.

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

ADHD is a chronic disease and unless it is treated, the problems experienced by the child or adolescent gradually increase. Correct diagnosis is very important as ADHD symptoms are also seen in many medical and psychological disorders. Therefore, when you think that you have symptoms, it is necessary to consult a child and adolescent psychiatrist. In ADHD, the diagnosis is made by clinical observation, information obtained from parents and teachers, and psychometric evaluations when necessary. Unfortunately, since the number of child and adolescent psychiatrists is low in our country, wrong diagnoses are frequently made and accordingly, wrong treatments are frequently applied.

Treatment

In ADHD, the family and the teacher should be well informed and the possible applications should be discussed. Since each child exhibits unique behaviors, treatment should be started after evaluation by a child and adolescent psychiatrist.

1. Drug therapy

Studies (especially multimodal treatment study of children with ADHD MTA 2007) and many treatment guidelines show that the most effective treatment in ADHD is drug therapy. The drugs used in the treatment have positive effects on mobility, inattention and impulsivity. Unfortunately, in our country, misinformation about these drugs (addiction, damage to the brain) delays the treatment and leads to the development of more important problems. Recommended medications should be used under the control of a child and adolescent psychiatrist.

2. Non-drug treatments

· Psychoeducation

Informing the patient and family about ADHD is one of the most important parts of the treatment and constitutes the first step

· Attending school Regulations for

Behavioral treatments

Family therapy

Other than these treatment options, methods that have not been scientifically proven to be effective and have not been approved as the first choice by any psychiatric association (computer therapy, biofeedback) , music therapy, vitamin applications, various diets) can unfortunately attract the attention of families and delay the start of treatment.

Just as you go to the pediatrician for any physical illness of your child, you must make sure that the person you go to for evaluation is a child and adolescent psychiatrist for attention deficit, mobility and other psychological problems
