Izmir Metropolitan Municipality is preparing to put a mobile operating room field hospital into service for the treatment of earthquake victims in the tent city it created in Antakya. With the measures taken by the Eşrefpaşa Hospital medical teams, which treat the earthquake victims in the infirmary, epidemics are tried to be prevented. President Tunç Soyer said, “We are determined to expand the scope of health services and to maintain it permanently.”
There are medical teams affiliated with Eşrefpaşa Hospital among the personnel that the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality has sent to the region to serve in the earthquake zone, the number of which is approaching a thousand. In the coordination center established in the Hatay Expo area, physicians continue their examination and treatment services, and carry out preventive studies against epidemics. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer also examined the center, which is currently serving as an infirmary and will turn into a field hospital in a short time, with Eşrefpaşa Hospital Chief Physician Devrim Demirel. President Soyer stated that preparations to establish a field hospital in the region are about to be completed and said, “We will expand the scope of our health service. We are determined to continue these services permanently, not temporarily.”
Eşrefpaşa Hospital Chief Physician Devrim Demirel also said that the unit where x-ray services and minor surgeries will be performed will also be established next to the field hospital.
Fight against epidemics
Providing information about the health situation in the tent city, Eşrefpaşa Hospital Infectious Diseases Specialist Öner Özer said, “We are here to protect the health of earthquake victims. Epidemics are mostly transmitted through food and close contact, such as food and drink. But thanks to the precautions we take, there are normal infections that occur in the winter period. Regarding food, our municipality implements all soup kitchen procedures. A common hygienic food distribution system was established. Apart from these, there is an increase in chronic diseases and psychological traumas. That’s why we are taking the necessary precautions,” he said.
“Physicians continue their examination in their branches”
Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialist Dr. Artun Aydın said, “We treat injured earthquake victims. We have pediatricians, internists and infectious diseases physicians. They also continue to work in their own fields. Patients with chronic diseases are given their medications regularly and their examinations are carried out. Despite the threat of the epidemic, we are doing spraying work between the tents. We provide hygiene packages, masks, gloves and disinfectants to our earthquake victims.
