Very few people do not complain of neck pain at some point in their life. Neck pain occurs as a result of disorders of the bones, joints, discs between the vertebrae and muscles and ligaments around the spine.
In diseases that cause neck pain, the pain is only in the neck in some cases. In some cases, it can spread from the neck to the head, back, arms and even the chest. The patient’s neck movements are often limited. Numbness radiating to the arm and hand, feeling of weakness in the hands, dizziness and lightheadedness are frequently mentioned complaints. Neck pain can sometimes affect a person’s activities of daily living and impair their quality of life.
Causes of Neck Pain:
Neck hernia and neck slips are the most serious causes. Disc degeneration, neck spine arthrosis (calcification), myofascial pain syndromes, microtraumas are the most common causes. Tumors are extremely rare.
Engaging in repetitive activities, combined with bad position and psychological stress, reveals the picture of “injury due to overuse”. Working by bending the head forward or raising it excessively for a long time causes muscle fatigue and muscle contraction, causing neck and back pain. It is frequently encountered due to working conditions and increased use of computers.
Neck Hernia:
Neck hernia is the disease caused by the displacement of the cartilage between the neck vertebrae towards the spinal canal, and the pressure on the nerves coming to the arm and the spinal cord.
Hernia may occur in the neck as well as in the waist. The discs separating the vertebrae are considered semi-joints. It consists of a gel-like substance in the middle of the disc and its surrounding cushions. The outer ones of these pads are harder than the inner ones. These pads begin to wear out in cases of aging and exposure to trauma. The outer layer gradually gets thinner and is torn after a sudden reverse movement.
The inner gel-like substance slides out of these tears and presses on our nerve, which leaves the spinal cord and goes to our arm, giving the movement order to those regions or allowing you to perceive the sensation of those regions. Thus, we feel neck-arm pain and numbness, tingling, and sometimes weakness in that arm. This is the most important symptom and requires surgical treatment without delay.
