prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: Learned autism is on the rise

by clinic

Pointing out the negative effects of uncontrolled technology use on the development of the child, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said that this situation causes learned autism. Stating that the child who spends time with a computer, tablet or television all day cannot communicate, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, “Learned autism is this: A child who works with computers all day cannot communicate. Uncle can’t say how are you right away. Playing with the computer is learned autism. You say that he is very smart and genius at an adult age, but everyone laughs and does not understand. ‘What are they laughing at?’ She cannot understand because her emotional literacy skills are not developed. Learned autism is on the rise.

Üsküdar University Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan evaluated behavioral disorders in children.

What is child conduct disorder?

Stating that the child has a behavioral maturity for all ages, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “If the child does not show the maturity of behavior suitable for his age, those situations fall within the boundaries of behavioral disorders. For example, the kidnapping of the child can be given as an example. The child learns toilet training until the age of 1.5 -2 years. If a school-age child is still urinating, it is a behavioral disorder. If he bites his nails, he has a behavioral disorder. If the guests do not laugh instead of laugh, do not cry instead of crying, that is, if the guests do not know how to behave when they come, if they do not know when to sit and get up, then a behavioral disorder can be mentioned. In other words, the child should behave maturely in accordance with his age,” he said.

Stating that the child’s not behaving appropriately for his age can also be considered as a behavioral disorder, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “Shy, shy behavior, being too introverted, not talking to anyone is also a behavior disorder. For example, a guest comes to the house and cuts off the end of his overcoat. This is behavior disorder. It makes a mess, leaves it. These can be considered as behavioral disorders. Developing behavior is not something that comes genetically to a child. There is social learning in the child’s learning about life, developing behavior, distinguishing positive behavior from negative behavior. Some children have disruptive behavior disorders. For example, he starts a fire, is against everything, does not say yes, he enjoys breaking the rules. All these are behavioral disorders,” he said.

There is an increase in autism

Stating that the child should learn to behave according to his age, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said: “For example, he needs to know where to stand. How does a child learn this? It’s not genetic. Everyone has been affected globally by the pandemic period. Every age group has been affected. The child age group was even more affected. It is not very obvious, but we started to see serious cases in the child psychiatry outpatient clinic. There is an increase in autism. Why is autism on the rise? There are two types of autism. There is autism that is genetically derived and autism that develops later. All of these are called autistic spectrum disorders. These children’s brains develop differently. In order for the child not to have a neurodevelopmental disorder, four or five skills must be well developed. Fine motor skills, gross motor skills. For example, fine motor skill is being able to button, and gross motor skill is playing ball. The ability to walk without falling is a gross motor skill. They have mental intelligence skills. On the contrary, these intelligence skills and logical intelligence skills develop very well during the pandemic period, but on the contrary, fine motor and gross motor skills do not develop.

delayed speech a sign of autism

Stating that language development in children is also important, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “It is very important to develop language skills. Delayed speech is a sign of autism, although the child has not learned to form sentences even though he is four years old. We look at whether he is autistic, and the child is at home in front of the TV all day, this is called clip syndrome. The child watches clips all the time, does not feel the need to talk. He does not learn to speak when he does not feel, and he cannot speak because he does not learn. Television and tablet cheap sitter. The parents give the tablet in his hand. The child spends time there, they think how well they linger. The child only develops his visual skills there, but he cannot develop linguistic skills and auditory skills. He cannot develop fine and gross motor skills. The child learns all of these in the social environment, in the environment of friends.”

The child learns everything in the family

Noting that the first social environment for the child is the family, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “The family is institutionally sacred because it is the child’s primary school. Developed countries began to see the dire consequences of family disintegration. They are screaming what to do,” he said.

Noting that a new branch of science has emerged at the moment, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “The children’s wisdom education has started. Why is it taught? It is aimed to teach them not to lie, to be sharing and to empathize. Empathy is more developed impulsively in girls and less in boys. They are observing kindergarten children. When someone falls, the girls go to help and the boys continue to play. Male egocentrism is the result of his biological nature. The fact that girls are empathetic is also a gift from their biological nature. We need a family environment to educate children in the right way. It has to be a safe space, so the house is actually a safe space. We call houses the last shelter family. The home is a place where the child feels safe. If the child is happy at home, that child has received the greatest gift. It is more valuable than expensive gifts. A smile and a few nice words are enough for him,” he said.

Positive behaviors should be reinforced

Stating that the child’s positive behaviors should be reinforced, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “It is important to approve the good behavior of the child instead of approaching and criticizing them negatively. It is important to express emotions by saying, ‘What a beautiful thing you did, bravo to you’.

Stating that the child learned the basic rules of behavior until the age of 10, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan also warned about the punishment to be given to the child:

“The most important punishment is seeing his parents upset. If the parents are generous with love, the child immediately corrects the mistake by saying, ‘I did it wrong,’ when he sees that the morale of the parents is depressed. During the pandemic period, the child was mostly together with the mother and father. If there are training mistakes in between, it will break out.”

Reminding that if there are deficiencies in teaching skills to the child, various methods can be used, Tarhan said, “The child comes to us in such cases, we do a sensory integration test. Then we see that some of the skills are underdeveloped and we work on weak areas. Visual skills, balance skills, auditory skills are all studied and fine and gross motor skills are learned here. These methods are used to improve behavior in normal autism.”

Beware of learned autism!

Referring to the concept of learned autism, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “For example, this situation is very common in those who are interested in technical subjects such as computers. Learned autism is this: The child who spends all day with computers, tablets, smartphones and televisions cannot communicate. Uncle can’t say how are you right away… He plays with the computer, it is learned autism. Therefore, these are all pathological conditions. You say he is very smart, genius at an adult age, but not everyone laughs. ‘What are they laughing at?’ She cannot understand because her emotional literacy skills are not developed. Learned autism is on the rise. He plays ball but can’t adapt. Can’t get into proper position. We need to train them one-on-one,” he said.

Brain-based learning comes to the fore

Stating that the method has been changed in the education system today and brain-based learning has come to the fore, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “It has become a thing of the past to put the child in line and teach theoretical lessons for hours. There is active learning, there is learning by experience. It is based on neuroscience. There is brain-based learning. What’s in this learning? This learning model will teach the child physics and chemistry in a social environment. The child who will learn in the garden on the street, we will not teach by cramming into the rooms. Children raised in this way are used to being ruled by fear. In a society ruled by fear, progress should not be expected,” he said.

Stating that the Google application emerged from two master’s theses, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “All of this happens with entrepreneurship and self-confidence. If we do not raise our children in such an environment, but raise them with the old tradition so that they can be like candles, we will lose the global race. We become a consumer object. If we want to be a productive society, there must be a production-oriented life system. At the moment, we think of consuming it constantly, as hedonism, that is, pleasureism has become a global disease. However, children should be taught to be productive and to think in this direction at a young age. The child should be taught the idea of what I can produce. This is behavior development,” he said.

Responsibility should be taught before the age of six

Emphasizing that it is also important to give responsibility to the child from an early age, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan pointed out the importance of giving responsibility to children before the age of six and said:

“If you do not teach the child the responsibilities of that age, the child will become egocentric. He becomes a narcissistic individual. It’s a lot in our culture. He’s addicted to himself. He gets depressed and cannot learn how to solve the problem. He can’t learn to amuse himself. He can’t learn to calm himself down. When he is sad, he does not know how to relieve sadness. These are problem-solving skills. Parents should teach these to their children. It is very difficult to teach them after school starts, it is too late. The period after the age of six is also important, of course, but it is necessary to teach them before the age of six. If the child does not learn, he becomes an addicted personality. He wants to ask everything to his mother, to someone. He has to live addicted, he cannot become individualized.”

Pointing out the necessity of developing imagination skills in children, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “Parents steal their children’s dreams without realizing it. The child will dream, then want something, when the desire awakens, the need will arise, when the need arises, he will dream again and develop a purpose. It turns into a cycle of needs. If the parents of a child who does not dream, do whatever the child wants, there is no need for the child to dream. This child should not be expected to be an explorer, enterprising, and productive person.”

Pay attention to these points when raising children

Stating that parents acted incorrectly due to inconsistent discipline in raising children, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said:

“We make important mistakes in raising our children. This situation has emerged more in the pandemic. The social environment, like the school, was a little roughened by the mistakes of the parents. Now the only source of teaching has become parents. Here, the type of child who develops both love and anger will emerge. If the child does bad deeds, the child has inconsistent discipline at home, even if the parents do not lie. Where there was inconsistent discipline, the child lied one day, the mother did not react and ignored it. The boy learned to get results by lying. Children, for example, have defensive lies. They lie defensively to relieve their sense of guilt. In this case, if the mother beats the child because you broke the vase and you are lying, the child will only learn to be afraid. However, his mother said, ‘You actually made a mistake. You said something untrue. If he says, ‘This is a bigger mistake than breaking the vase’, the child learns that honesty is at a premium in this house and that his mother values him. In this case, the child does not perform a reflex such as self-defense by lying again. 0-6 is a young age, but the brain will learn it at that age. Therefore, everything is learned better between the ages of 0-6. 50 percent of what we learn in our lives is what we learn between the ages of 0-6. Behavior development is the same. It is necessary to develop a regulated environment in which it is not approved to lie to a lying child. It is important that parents create a common language. We need to plant seeds in the developing soul of the child with stories and words. If there is an unapproved environment at any age, if the lie does not make a premium, the child gives up on it. It is very important that we establish such a family environment for the child.”
