Experts, who state that the work group where mobbing is experienced the most in the world, is health workers, recommend that the person be aware of his/her own abilities and establish deep and satisfying relationships in preventing mobbing.

Üsküdar University NP Etiler Medical Center Specialist Clinical Psychologist Serkan Elçi shared his suggestions on what to do in the fight against mobbing, which has been on the agenda recently.

Mobbing is done systematically

Specialist Clinical Psychologist Serkan Elçi states that mobbing can be defined as “The systematic and long-term humiliation of the employee by one or more people in the workplace, humiliation, gossiping, preventing the employee from reaching the necessary information for his/her job, and causing the employee to quit his/her job by being disturbed psychologically and socially. He said it was defined as “delivery”.

Mobbing causes depressive symptoms

Noting that being exposed to mobbing by the employer and other employees affects it in different ways, Serkan Elçi emphasized that such behaviors by the employer cause a feeling of worthlessness on the employee and said, “This worthlessness causes sleep disorders, and then depressive and anxiety symptoms. Symptoms such as pessimism, depression, not being able to enjoy previously enjoyed activities, anger and anxiety are the most common symptoms.

Employees can also apply mobbing

Noting that being exposed to mobbing by the other working group can also show similar symptoms, Specialist Clinical Psychologist Serkan Elçi said:

“Loneliness brings with it social withdrawal, hopelessness, dislike, and ultimately low self-esteem. Beliefs that he will fail no matter what he does cause him to deepen and become a core belief about himself. This has a quality that can be reflected not only in the mood of the person in that workplace, but also in the next business life and even in the social and family life.”

Narcissistic people are prone to mobbing.

Expressing that there is a strong possibility of personality disorder in people who apply mobbing, Serkan Elçi noted that the personality trait called narcissism, who considers himself superior to others, and who thinks that no one’s success is above his own, is especially suitable for mobbing.

People who perceive a mental threat at work also apply mobbing…

Specialist Clinical Psychologist Serkan Elçi said, “In addition to this, people who are overly controlling, have a desire to be strong all the time, make an excessive effort to be noticed and cannot prevent themselves from displaying these with malicious behaviors are also prone to mobbing. From time to time, people who perceive a mental threat to either getting a promotion or being fired try to establish dominance by applying pressure and violence by feeling under threat.”

Healthcare workers are mobbed the most.

Serkan Elçi said that researches show that people who are honest, have a work ethic, are shy and do not act politically are exposed to mobbing and that this situation is also related to other people’s malicious ambitions and thinking that they cannot defend the rights of others.

Serkan Elçi also said: “Research shows that healthcare workers are the work group where mobbing is experienced the most in the world. Their workload increases with these practices of their supervisors or other colleagues, who need to exert intense effort due to their profession. This also causes them to make mistakes or fail to complete their work. As their sense of failure will increase even more, mental depression will come along with it.”

Focus on positive relationships

Specialist Clinical Psychologist Serkan Elçi listed his suggestions for combating mobbing as follows:

“As stated in the concept of psychological well-being; Being aware of one’s abilities, contributing in line with his abilities, having a strong social life outside of work and having a sufficient level of social support, establishing deep and satisfying relationships, believing that he leads a meaningful life, having preoccupations that he enjoys doing outside of work and forgetting how time passes will help to get rid of mobbing. . Nietzsche’s statement that ‘a person who has a reason to live can bear almost any way’ can be said for people who have the necessary spiritual equipment to fight mobbing. It is very important to focus on family and friend relationships and to be aware of positive relationships that are good for us.”
