~~ Causes of Low Class Success in Children
Lesson failure in children and adolescents is one of the most common problems. Especially the difficulties brought by today’s education system put families and children in both financial and moral difficulties from the beginning of school life. The reasons for failure in courses, which are among the most frequent applications to child psychiatry clinics in recent years, are a situation that needs to be investigated. Low course success can be seen from the beginning of the education life, as well as with the decline of very good courses later on.
Contrary to popular belief, course failure is not only related to low intelligence level. There are many factors independent of intelligence that affect course success. Some of these can be counted as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, learning disorders, school phobia, and depression.
Factors affecting school success are not only psychiatric disorders. Problems with school, problems in the family, problems in friendships are the factors that can affect the success of the course. Especially as a requirement of today’s education system, children who start a big marathon around the age of 5 run without stopping and without rest, and parents may also experience difficulties by participating in this marathon more than children, sometimes sharing the heavy burden on their children. Families are overwhelmed by this heavy burden and have difficulty finding their way out. This situation can affect school and exam success negatively, as well as affect family relationships and environmental relationships negatively. Families should not judge a child without investigating the underlying causes of school failure.
Attention deficit and special learning disorder (dyslexia) are among the most important psychiatric problems affecting school success. Attention deficit can be found alone or in combination with hyperactivity. Learning disability, on the other hand, is a failure in some or all areas of arithmetic, reading and writing, although the child’s intelligence level is within normal limits. This situation is confused with mental retardation, but if it is not distinguished and treated by a specialist, it may even cause the child to interrupt his education life.
Another important cause of school failure is attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder. Although it can be recognized more easily when accompanied by hyperactivity, the situation in children with only attention deficit may not be easily noticed. These children are called lazy, irresponsible, lethargic, and do not like to study, and it does not come to mind that this situation is caused by an illness. Especially children with attention deficit encounter a significant decrease in their lessons when they reach the 4th grade of primary school. Early recognition of this condition and initiation of treatment plays an important role in the child’s educational life. Families should apply to a child psychiatrist as soon as they notice such a problem. Initiation of appropriate treatments after the necessary evaluations and tests are carried out will directly affect the academic life of many children.
