Attention deficit and special learning disorder (dyslexia) are among the most important psychiatric problems affecting school success. Learning disability, on the other hand, is a failure in some or all areas of arithmetic, reading and writing, although the child’s intelligence level is within normal limits. This situation is confused with mental retardation, but if it is not distinguished and treated by a specialist, it may even cause the child to interrupt his education life.
Another important cause of school failure is attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder. Although it can be recognized more easily when accompanied by hyperactivity, the situation in children with only attention deficit may not be easily noticed. These children are called lazy, irresponsible, lethargic, and do not like to study, and it does not come to mind that this situation is caused by an illness. Especially children with attention deficit encounter a significant decrease in their lessons when they reach the 4th grade of primary school. Early recognition of this condition and initiation of treatment plays an important role in the child’s educational life. Families should apply to a child psychiatrist as soon as they notice such a problem. Initiation of appropriate treatments after the necessary evaluations and tests are carried out will directly affect the academic life of many children.
