Snoring Is Not A Simple Health Problem

by clinic

Near East University Hospital Ear Nose Throat Head and Neck Surgery Department Specialist Prof. Dr. K. Çağdaş Kazıkdaş says that snoring, which is seen in at least half of adults and a significant part of children, is an important sleep disorder. He stated that snoring is most commonly seen in adults due to nasal congestion, bone curvature, nasal concha enlargement, allergy and chronic sinusitis.

Although it comes to the fore with the deterioration of sleep quality and disturbing the people around, snoring can be a harbinger of important health problems. Stating that the most common cause of snoring in adults is nasal congestion, Prof. Dr. Kadir Çağdaş Kazıkdaş also stated that bone curvature, nasal concha enlargement, allergy and chronic sinusitis are among the causes that affect snoring. Stating that health problems such as soft palate, enlargement and sagging of the uvula accompanying these problems can aggravate the current picture, Prof. Dr. K. Çağdaş Kazıkdaş stated that problems such as allergic rhinitis that narrows the upper airway from the nose to the vocal cords, tonsils larger than normal, structural anomalies in the lower and upper jaws, and excessively large tongue can cause snoring.

Signs of Snoring Adenoid in Children

Stating that personal factors can also contribute to snoring, Prof. Dr. K. Çağdaş Kazıkdaş stated that obesity, excessive use of alcohol and cigarettes, reflux disease in the stomach, drugs used for aging, depression and similar diseases, lack of sleep hygiene and shift working conditions can cause snoring: or a sign of adenoid. Snoring in children is a sign of narrowing of the airway. If the narrowing is very severe, the airway may be completely closed. This results in a pause in breathing during sleep, called apnea.”

In Which Situations Is Snoring Important?

Stating that snoring is a sleep disorder seen in at least half of adults and a significant portion of children, Prof. Dr. K. Çağdaş Kazıkdaş stated that not all snoring is continuous or regular and therefore does not pose a problem. He said that the person’s loud snoring every night should be handled medically. Dr. K. Çağdaş Kazıkdaş said, “In addition, if the person experiences respiratory pauses that we call apnea during sleep, wakes up without sleeping, or complains of drowsiness and concentration disorders during the day, he should consult a specialist doctor as soon as possible.” Emphasizing that snoring also reduces the quality of life of the people around, Prof. Dr. Kazıkdaş said, “The sound of snoring disturbs your bed or room, and even the people you share the same roof with, rather than you. According to a recent study, a snorer reduces his partner’s sleep duration by an average of one hour and leaves his partner sleepless. In addition, snoring can also be a symptom of respiratory pauses during sleep.

Is Snoring Dangerous?

Stating that snoring causes problems such as getting up tired in the morning, napping during the day and concentration impairment at work, Prof. Dr. Kazıkdaş stated that all these threaten work safety and cause attention disorders. In addition, Prof. Stating that respiratory pauses lasting more than ten seconds during sleep, called apnea, are the cause of more serious health problems in terms of heart and brain. Dr. K. Çağdaş Kazıkdaş reminded that sleep is actually a process in which the body repairs and renews itself with the released hormones and prepares for the new day. prof. Dr. K. Çağdaş Kazıkdaş continued his words as follows: “While you are awake during the day, all the muscles surrounding the upper respiratory tract work and keep the airway open. However, during sleep, these muscles relax, as in all other systems. It causes partial or complete obstruction in the airway. In partial strictures, patients complain of snoring, and pauses in breathing are not uncommon. The airway is completely blocked, and when breathing stops, the oxygen level in the blood decreases. Unfortunately, when this situation becomes long-lasting, it invites many diseases such as weight gain, depression, high blood pressure, heart and lung failure, heart rhythm and cerebral circulation disorders, and impotence in men.

Treatment and Diagnostic Methods

Stating that for patients who apply to the doctor with the complaint of snoring, a detailed disease history should be taken first. Dr. Kazıkdaş stated that obtaining information from people who witnessed snoring at home, if possible, is the first step in the diagnosis. Stating that the information obtained from the spouses of the patients is very useful for treatment, Prof. Dr. Kazıkdaş stated that with the detailed endoscopic and ear, nose and throat examination performed afterwards, the problems that were mentioned before and causing stenosis in the respiratory tract could be detected. prof. Dr. K. Çağdaş Kazıkdaş continued his statements as follows; “Sleep endoscopy, which is currently accepted in the current literature, is the healthiest and most successful diagnostic method, is used for snoring and accompanying apnea in our hospital. The artificial sleep we create in our patients during this procedure imitates night sleep for a short time and provides us with the opportunity to observe what kind of problem the patient encounters with snoring during the night. Alternatively, we can measure your sleep quality at home with sleep tracking programs that can be downloaded to smart phones. Such programs have helped us a lot in understanding diseases, especially in recent years. I can proudly say that our scientific studies on this subject have been published on behalf of the Near East University in American medical journals.”

Methods Used in Snoring Surgery

Stating that all problems that narrow the upper airway from the nose to the vocal cords cause snoring, Prof. Dr. K. Çağdaş Kazıkdaş stated that any surgical procedure can be performed to help open the airway when the area or regions causing the problem are identified. prof. Dr. K. Çağdaş Kazıkdaş continued his words about the diagnosis process as follows: “The most important thing is to make the correct diagnosis and to apply the necessary surgical intervention. Because there are more than 100 scientifically defined surgical methods for palate and minor tongue surgery. This shows us that there is no single truth about snoring surgery, and that choosing the right surgical method for each individual is of great importance in success.”

Recovery Time

Stating that the recovery period after a successful nose surgery can be 2 or 3 weeks on average, and 2 or 3 months in soft tissue-oriented palate, tongue and minor tongue surgeries, Prof. Dr. K. Çağdaş Kazıkdaş said, “Since interventions to multiple regions, called combined surgery, are performed in our clinic, the success of the operation in snoring is observed by our patients from approximately the 2nd week onwards.”
