Things to Consider After Implant Application

What should I avoid after my implant treatment?

  • Keep the cotton pad placed in the mouth on the relevant area for 45 minutes – 1 hour. Afterwards; Do not discard the tampon and replace it with anything else, unless your surgeon tells you otherwise.
  • Take care to consume only cold drinks for the first 8-9 hours and do not eat until the effect of the local anesthetic wears off. Avoid hot drinks or hot food on the first day and blood, saliva, etc. in the mouth. Never spit, swallow, even if it accumulates. Do not use a straw while drinking.
  • Try not to disturb the area with your tongue or fingers. Do not do strenuous exercise (eg jogging / gym) for the first 48 hours.

Will there be swelling or bruising around the implant?

  • There may be some swelling and/or bruising following your treatment, which usually peaks after two to three days.
  • It’s not something to worry about. It is an expected situation after surgical procedures. Both swelling and bruising will naturally decrease after a few days.
  • The first 12 hours after the procedure; ice packs wrapped in a towel, sealed gel ice packs, etc. With cold application, swelling and pain can be reduced.

10 MINUTES ICE APPLICATION It can be applied for a long time without causing ice burns, in the form of 10 MINUTES REST. Ice application after twenty-four hours is not beneficial.

  • Sleeping with light support on two or three high pillows for the first few days of the procedure may also help reduce post-procedure complaints.

Will there be pain after the implant procedure?

  • Pain is not usually a big problem.
  • Of course, like any surgery in your mouth; Even if you have pain for a few days after implant surgery, this can be easily controlled with simple analgesics (painkillers) that your surgeon will prescribe. . For headache, pain in the affected area and muscle spasm, you can use the painkillers you normally take and take your first dose a few hours after the procedure; Take just before the local anesthetic/drowsiness begins to disappear. You should take these regularly during the first two days after surgery at the maximum dose indicated.
  • If you have been prescribed a course of antibiotics to take after surgery, please ensure that you have properly completed your Antibiotic treatment.
  • Even a few days after the procedure; sudden and severely increased pain, swelling, etc. You should call our clinic and inform your Surgeon as soon as possible so that we can make sure you do not develop an infection.

What should I do for mouth and implant area cleaning?

  • The early success of implant application depends on keeping the mouth as clean as possible.
  • You should also start cleaning your other teeth with a toothbrush as normal, starting the day after the procedure. Avoid brushing the surgical site for the first few days, but then, when sensitivity allows, begin to carefully and very delicately sweep the area with a toothbrush.
  • Antibacterial mouthwash and/or warm salt water gargles (a teaspoon of salt and a glass of boiled warm water) prescribed by your doctor, starting 24 hours after the procedure, are very beneficial for recovery in the first week. Make sure the water you are gargling is not hot enough to be scalded, and then hold the warm-hot mouthwash over the surgical area until it cools and spit it out. Repeat this as often as possible until the stitches are removed.
  • Try to keep food as far away from the surgical site and sutures as possible. Rinse after a meal to keep the area clean.
  • Do not smoke until the wound has healed, as this will seriously impair oral healing and significantly reduce the success of your implant’s fusion with the bone.

Can I wear my denture after treatment?

  • If you have a denture that covers the surgical area, please do not use your removable prosthesis in the first healing period until you are sure that your sutures are removed and the wounds are completely healed to protect the surgical area and your surgeon tells you otherwise.

What about the stitches around the implant?

  • The tampon left in the mouth immediately after the procedure is thrown out after 45 minutes. Some minor bleeding between the stitches in the relevant area is completely normal. If this continues, be sure to call our clinic and inform your surgeon.
  • The stitches may melt, break off and fall off, but if not removed, they usually stay in the mouth for about two to three weeks. Therefore, unless otherwise stated, do not forget to make an appointment with your surgeon in our clinic to have the sutures removed after 7-10 days.

If your implant procedure includes graft – bone powder application, an intervention related to the sinus area (internal, lateral lifting, etc.) or advanced surgical applications in case of bone deficiency in the lower jaw;

Continuation of numbness in the lips and tongue even after 24 hours, significant and increasing pain in the teeth adjacent to the treated area, early opening of the sutures, bruising and/or swelling progressing to the lower border of the neck in the lower jaw, etc. situations like
