Learning disorder is the situation in which a child with normal intelligence or above normal intelligence is given reading, writing and arithmetic education appropriate for his age and development, but his reading, writing and/or arithmetic skills are lower than measured by standard tests.
Children with learning disabilities may not be able to read words or they may read them incorrectly, slowly or with more effort. They may not understand the meaning of the material they are reading. Although some may read the reading material in question, they may have difficulty sequencing events, inferring from what is being read, or making sense of deeper messages. They may have trouble spelling (add new sounds or misspell sounds; replace vowels and consonants).
Children with writing disorders also have difficulties in written expression. Many grammatical errors, punctuation errors, inability to organize paragraph formation can be observed in his writings. Written explanations can be difficult to understand.
In arithmetic disorder, it is difficult for them to understand what numbers mean. They cannot calculate or have difficulty in calculating. They have difficulty in deciphering the relationship between numbers or numerical data. Although their friends have started to calculate mentally, those with arithmetic disorders continue to do finger calculations. They disappear in the middle of a calculation. They break out of the calculation and can change the transaction. Has difficulties with mathematical inferences (eg, when solving numerical problems, applying mathematical concepts, facts, or operations).
The diagnosis of learning disorder should be made by a child and adolescent psychiatrist.
Special education methods are used in the treatment of learning disorders.
