Dizziness, also known as vertigo, is defined as loss of stability and feeling of lightheadedness. Vertigo often manifests itself in situations related to rapid movement while moving or bending over and getting up. It can also occur independently of movement. Dizziness (vertigo) is not a disease in itself, but it can be a harbinger of a disease. So what is vertigo? How is it treated? Details are in our news…
What is Vertigo?
Vertigo is a disorder that occurs as a result of inner ear diseases in general, and less commonly as a result of disorders related to the brain and cerebellum. Often the stability organs in the inner ear play a valuable role in maintaining the stability of the body. The organs of stability, located side by side with the hearing organs, consist of 3 semicircular canals called labyrinths and two sacs. Both ears have this labyrinth structure. Forward and backward movement and gravity are sensed by the sacs, while rotation is sensed by the semicircular canals. This stability system allows us to understand the movement of the body. When standing still, equal and harmonious sensations come to the brain from both ears. Some problems in the inner ear or other organs, which can be seen as the cause of vertigo, can disrupt these messages, and in this case, everything around us seems to be moving even though we are still. This state of dizziness is called vertigo disease.
Peripheral vertigo
It is called destabilization due to the effect of the stability center in the inner ear or middle ear. Peripheral vertigo can be caused by any trouble in the musculoskeletal system such as neck pain or metabolic diseases such as hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism or hypoglycemia. When individuals come with a complaint of vertigo, they are first checked to see if they have a problem with the ear. General metabolic tests are requested from the patients. Sugar, cholesterol, thyroid, liver and kidney function tests, as well as all the tests, including the blood pressure of the person, are checked. Because all of these can trigger vertigo attacks. Any imbalance in the body can manifest itself with vertigo attacks.
Central vertigo
It occurs as a result of brain disorders. Central vertigos can be caused by tumors in the brain, bleeding, aneurysms in the vessels or different disorders of the brain vessels. In this case, patients are directed to the Neurology Department.
Symptoms of vertigo
The obvious symptom of vertigo is dizziness and is often caused by a problem with the stabilization system in the inner ear.
Dizziness due to ear diseases accompanied by a feeling of pressure in the ear,
Tinnitus,
Loss of stability,
Nausea-vomiting,
Ear discharge,
Unusual movements in the eyes can be observed.
Vertigo treatment
What is valuable in the treatment of vertigo is to find the source of the problem. If the disease causing vertigo is Meniere’s disease, special operations can be performed in cases where drug therapy and drug therapy are not sufficient. If the cause of the vertigo is a tumor, surgery is necessary. The treatment method recommended by the doctors for the formation of vertigo due to infection is regular rest and drug therapy. Caffeine, smoking, alcohol, tension, salt consumption, etc. triggering factors should be kept away from the patient’s life. Stability training is an effective method for patients diagnosed with vertigo. At the same time, movements that make the center of stability difficult should be avoided.
