It is the backward flow of urine from the bladder towards the ureters and kidney. Abnormal structuring at the bladder-ureter junction, high intravesical pressure (neurogenous bladder or difficult bladder outlet) can be detected.

What are the symptoms of vesicoureteral reflux?
Weakness, restlessness, loss of appetite and vomiting may be symptoms of VUR in a newborn baby. Older children may have abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of weight, fever, foul-smelling or cloudy urine. Pain during urination, frequent urination, nocturnal urinary incontinence, flank pain can be expressed by older children.

What problems does late diagnosis of VUR cause?
It may cause delay in diagnosis and chronic urinary infection, kidney inflammation, kidney damage, hypertension, chronic kidney failure.

What is VUR treatment?
VUR can be of varying degrees. For treatment, first of all, the cause of reflux should be well investigated. Bladder dysfunction and low-grade reflux can be monitored with medical treatment. However, in the presence of structural defect and advanced reflux, surgical treatment is preferred. Surgical treatment can be performed by open surgery or endoscopic injection.
