Beware of Food Poisoning This Season!

Beware of food poisoning, which increases with the coming of summer!

Food poisoning is the condition that occurs when a random food or beverage is consumed that has been contaminated with bacteria or toxins. There are 4 different types of bacteria that cause food poisoning. Staphylococcus is the most common genus that occurs in milk and dairy products, meat and salads. Symptoms begin to appear 2-3 hours after taking the food. The other type of bacteria is shigella. It occurs with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain 1-2 days after consuming the contaminated food. The most dangerous and fatal food poisoning is clostridium botulinum poisoning. It can be found mostly in canned food, meat, vegetables and fruits. The fourth variety is Bacillus cereus. This bacterium is found in rice and causes nausea and vomiting. In general, food poisoning begins suddenly, depending on the type of bacteria, it can occur in the middle of 30 minutes to 72 hours.

When you experience food poisoning;

  • In general, diarrhea and vomiting are typical symptoms of food poisoning. The poison in the body is thrown out. For this reason, anti-diarrheal and anti-vomiting medication should not be used at that time.
  • If there is very severe diarrhea and vomiting, the most valuable thing to do is to replace water loss with plenty of water intake or intravenous fluids.
  • To stop diarrhea, leaner foods such as pulp-poor, rice porridge, boiled potatoes, lean plain pasta, yoghurt should be preferred.
  • Vegetables should be consumed cooked and fruits should be consumed as peeled.
  • Fruits such as figs, apricots and grapes that will increase diarrhea should be avoided.

Things to consider in order not to get food poisoning;

  • Take care to consume vegetables and fruits after soaking them in vinegar water and washing them properly.
  • When you boil open milk with the classical boiling method, not all of the bacteria in it will die and the nutritional costs in the milk will be lost. For this reason, be careful to use pasteurized milk instead of open milk.
  • Pay attention to the temperature of your food, especially in the summer months when the temperatures rise very heavily. Do not quickly put very hot food in the refrigerator. Keep it at room temperature for a while, and after 1-2 hours put it in the refrigerator.
  • Meat, chicken, fish and eggs are risky protein sources that cause food poisoning. Therefore, make sure that the egg is cooked adequately and that the egg is not cracked. Wash the egg before use.
  • Defrost the food you have taken out of the freezer in the lower part of the refrigerator or put them in the pot directly as iced.
  • The most valuable thing is the hygiene of your hand and kitchen tools. Make sure that kitchen knives, boards, kitchen counters are clean and hygienic. Be careful to use your meat knife, vegetable knife and boards separately. Do not neglect your hand hygiene.
  • Pay attention to the expiration dates of the foods you buy.
  • Do not buy opened cans with swollen lids.
