Üsküdar University NP Feneryolu Medical Center Psychiatrist Assoc. Dr. Oğuz Tan shared critical information and made recommendations about the importance of psychological resilience in people after the disaster.

Losing resilience leads to problems

Emphasizing that people experience greater pain than ever after natural disasters, Assoc. Dr. Oğuz Tan said, “The situation is a much bigger source of stress. We can define psychological resilience as the ability to show mental flexibility, adapt, adapt and maintain competence in the face of trauma. If a person loses his psychological strength, he cannot do what he can do. He both loses the power to cope with the trauma, falls into despair, and cannot help those around him.”

Focus on points that can be controlled

Mentioning what needs to be done to create and maintain psychological resilience, Assoc. Dr. Oğuz Tan said, “We should focus on the points that can be controlled, not the points that cannot be controlled. A person should focus on what he can and what he can achieve. Another factor is to focus on the future. One should think about what might happen in the future and do the positive things that one can do. Finally, one should embrace social relationships and be able to hug friends, family and survivors.

Collective action will work

Assoc. Dr. Oğuz Tan pointed out that after natural disasters, one will not only experience feelings such as loss, grief and mourning, and concluded his words as follows:

“The person may also experience fear and insecurity. ‘My life is in danger, my future is ruined, how do I deal with this pain?’ With such thoughts, the person may feel helpless. The most effective way to deal with helplessness is solidarity. We are all on the side of the victims. They need to feel it. Disaster victims should also be in solidarity with survivors, their families and friends. Communication is very good, even negative emotions can be conveyed. If the person feels very bad, it is beneficial for everyone to hear even negative feelings. Collective action can work very well. Doing a job together, helping others, asking for help, not being afraid to ask for help will help the victims and all of us to overcome their feelings of helplessness.
