What is hallux valgus (bony protrusion on the big toe, bunion) disease?
by clinicby clinicBig toe pain is the protrusion of the big toe joint with an increase in the angle of the first toe, namely the metatarsal bone, which is called hallux valgus with a finger. Foot pain is one of the most common complaints of our patients who applied to the orthopedic outpatient clinic with pain. There are two most common causes of foot pain. Foot heel pain and toe pain. There is an angulation here with the way the first toe of the big toe opens towards the other fifth finger and the comb bone comes inward. The incident is actually a swelling in the foot, but when viewed from the outside, it is not just the bone that causes pain. A swelling occurs under the membrane surrounding the bone and the skin around it, and inside the shoe connected to the tram, against the impacts inside the shoe.

What is Heel Spur? A heel spur is a bone-like deposit that forms between the heel bone and the arch of the foot (sole), and is usually seen as a calcium deposit. It can cause pain in the entire foot, usually starting in the middle and front of the heel and then affecting other parts of the heel. This thorn-shaped accumulation generally occurs due to long-term stretching of muscle and connective tissue. The reasons that increase the tension are; • Walking barefoot on hard surfaces, • Standing for a long time or running, • Repetitive pressure increases (such as jumping, etc.) Inflammation symptoms such as pain, swelling, temperature increase can be seen in the anterior part of the heel. On the X-ray, a bony protrusion of approximately 1 cm in the form of a rose thorn can be seen on the heel. However, bone spurs may not be present in every X-ray film. This condition is called “heel spur syndrome”.

Hallux Valgus disease is mostly seen in women and increasing after the age of 30-40. This protrusion on the big toe is a disease that manifests itself with pain in the foot and difficulty in wearing shoes. In this disease, angulation of the first metacarpal bone of the thumb to the side of the second finger is observed. Tension and elongation are observed in the soft tissues of the first metacarpal bone and the finger joint. With the development of bony prominence in the thumb and deformity in the joint, the load-bearing function of the thumb decreases.

How is the diagnosis made in hallux valgus (bone protrusion on the big toe) disease?
by clinicby clinicHallux valgus disease is a disease involving the first metacarpal bone and the big toe bone. Bone Protrusion on the Big Toe is 90% diagnosed on a good examination. After that, the angles of the bony deformity are measured with direct x-rays and radiographs, except in some cases, MRI and tomography are also included in this diagnostic process. After non-surgical treatments are tried in Hallux Valgus disease, if x-ray is required to correct the bone protrusion in this big toe, MRI-tomography is performed and the diagnosis is made. After the operation plan is drawn, it is necessary to proceed to the operation part because hallux valgus treatment is not possible without surgery. There are several types of surgery. The recurrence rate of hallux valgus disease is very low with the correct surgery. While performing the Hallux Valgus surgery, the measurements obtained from the films made specifically for the person are evaluated. It is above the bone to bring the comb bone to the required position.
