1. Treatment of ADHD is important for academic success:

Children with ADHD have difficulty in following the topics their teachers tell because they have difficulty in maintaining their attention. It becomes more difficult for them to learn the lesson in class. They often write poorly or forget their homework. Because inattention is almost everywhere, they get bored quickly when completing their homework and often dislike doing homework. In the exam, their hasty and careless style causes them to read the questions incompletely; they make frequent mistakes. Although they know the path of the problem, they reach wrong results due to processing errors. As a result of all these, course success decreases; moreover, the child has difficulty in showing his/her current performance due to careless reading errors, impulsiveness and impulsiveness. After a while, the child loses motivation to follow his lessons and study. Often amotivation and ADHD go together. Lack of motivation further reduces course success. The child, whose success in the course decreases, gets colder from school over time and his chances of gaining a profession by reading are reduced.

2. The treatment of ADHD is important in terms of peer, teacher and family relationships:

Although children with ADHD are often sociable and easy to relate to, their impatient and impulsive behaviors can be seen in peer relationships. can cause problems. Due to their impulsivity, they have difficulty in waiting their turn, interrupting other children’s games and conversations, and easily fighting verbally or physically. Because their attention span is short-lived, children with ADHD may not appreciate social cues as well as other children. This leads to the inability to behave as required by the social environment and communication. They often have difficulty following rules and social hierarchy. They may exhibit a more “bossy” attitude in social situations. They may insist that everything be according to their wishes. They may overreact to social events. Rejection or teasing from other children easily causes verbal or physical aggression in children with ADHD. As a result of all these, deterioration in friends, teachers and family relationships is observed. Studies have shown that children with ADHD have fewer close friends.

3. ADHD is important in that it reduces self-confidence and increases susceptibility to other psychiatric problems:

Negative warnings are given to these children almost everywhere at all times. The decrease in academic success in a child with ADHD causes questioning and various judgments after a while: “Why am I not successful? I’m not as hardworking as other kids. I am not as good as other children.” Negative stimuli cause a decrease in self-confidence and a decrease in self-image, and pave the way for the development of depression over time. Substance use and suicide attempts are seen at higher rates in a child with depression. Negative stimuli lead to opposition in the child after a while. If disobedience is not handled well, it can gradually turn into truancy, meeting a gang on the street, using cigarettes, alcohol or other substances, committing crimes, and behavioral disorders (Figure 1). Studies have shown that people with ADHD increase their crime and substance use in their future lives. Some studies have shown that there is a relationship between ADHD and suicide attempts. Most likely, this relationship is due to the fact that ADHD increases the susceptibility to comorbid disorders such as depression and conduct disorder (comorbid disorders) and the impulsivity inherent in the disorder. No relationship was found between methylphenidate (Ritalin; Concerta; Medikinet) used in the treatment of ADHD and suicide.

4. ADHD is important in terms of affecting quality of life and emotional state/happiness of parents.

Studies have shown that ADHD reduces the quality of life by affecting the psychosocial domain, self-confidence, self-esteem, emotional reactions and general behaviors. Although children with ADHD are enthusiastic about many activities and hobbies, it can be difficult for them to consistently maintain the activities they have started. This situation negatively affects their social, emotional and self-confidence development. Moreover, ADHD has negative effects not only on the child but also on the life of the parents. Studies have shown that it adversely affects the emotional state of the parents, their happiness, the opportunities to devote time to their own needs and pleasures, the social life of the parents, their quality of life, family activities and integrity. It has been determined that mothers have more restrictive and negative attitudes towards children with ADHD, but they have more inadequate control skills despite their restrictive attitudes.

5. ADHD is important in terms of affecting daily life:

Individuals with ADHD are more likely to engage in risky activities, reckless driving and be exposed to accidents. For example, studies have shown that young drivers with ADHD are 2 to 4 times more likely to have motor vehicle accidents, have 3 times more injuries, and are 4 times more likely to have faults in these accidents. In addition, they experience more problems and separation in their future romantic relationships and marital life. Changing jobs, not being able to show long-term persistence in a certain job is more common in individuals with ADHD.

As a result, although an individual with ADHD is well-intentioned, smart and intelligent in nature, he or she has problems in social, emotional, professional areas, school skills or some areas of daily life, and has difficulties in realizing himself in a positive way.
