Ege University (EU) Faculty of Health Sciences organized a panel on “Women’s Health in Disasters” on the occasion of “International Women’s Day”. EÜ Faculty of Health Sciences Dean Prof. Dr. Esin Ceber Turfan, Head of the Department of Midwifery, Faculty of Health Departments, Prof. Dr. Neriman Soğukpınar, academicians and students attended.
Speaking at the opening of the event, Dean Prof. Dr. Esin Ceber Turfan celebrated the International Women’s Day and made statements about the meaning and importance of the day. prof. Dr. Ceber Turfan said, “When we look at various parts of the world, you see that geography is destiny. The fate of this geography is mostly experienced by women. I congratulate the women’s day of all the women who work hard for the society with their children and families, and also for the geography they live in.”
prof. Dr. Neriman Soğukpınar said, “As you all know, the International Working Women’s Day, which has been commemorated for many years without going back to ancient times, is actually a day of commemoration rather than a celebration. Today is an important day that left a lasting impression on behalf of women who lost their lives in the struggle for women’s rights. We have seen and experienced together how deeply the earthquake disaster in our country has affected human health. Although we heard about the experiences of the women in the disaster area from the press or perhaps most of the time firsthand, we organized this event in order to give a voice to what happened in general. In this context, I congratulate everyone who contributed to the event.”
The panel drew attention to women’s mental health and reproductive health in disasters.
Moderated by Prof. Dr. Birsen Karaca Saydam’s panel, Dr. Instructor Member Mahide Demirelöz Akyüz and Dr. Instructor Member Zehra Baykal Akmeşe attended as a speaker. On the panel, Dr. Instructor Member Mahide Demirelöz Akyüz made a presentation titled “Women’s Reproductive Health in Disasters”. Dr. Instructor Member Demirelöz Akyüz said, “In addition to many health problems that arise after the disaster, women’s reproductive health is one of the issues that should be considered in this regard. It is very important for pregnant women to receive maternity services in healthy conditions, especially during disasters. Especially at this point, all healthcare professionals need to fulfill their duties and responsibilities and be prepared for possible situations.
Making a presentation titled “Women’s Mental Health in Disasters”, Dr. Instructor Member Zehra Baykal Akmeşe said, “We are going through very difficult times as a country. I would like to thank everyone who contributed both academically and clinically to our health personnel and students who work in the field, and to our citizens who were victims of the earthquake, for their service work. Unfortunately, it will take many years to recover after the earthquake. Our past and present experiences provide clues as to how well our mental health will be in the future. With globalization, we are trying to cope with disasters such as economic crises, pandemics and earthquakes. Strategies should be developed to improve and protect mental health, and efforts should be made to strengthen the society.
