Breast milk and fasting

by clinic

Breast milk; It is a natural food with high bioavailability and easy to digest, containing all the liquid, energy and nutritional elements necessary for ideal growth and development in the newborn.

Breastfeeding is a special period in terms of physiological and psychological state. Breastfeeding mothers need a healthy, adequate, balanced diet and psychological support. During this period, at least 1800-2000 calories should be taken daily and around 3 liters of water should be drunk. During breastfeeding, an additional 500 calories should be added to the daily calorie diet.

For this purpose, daily protein, carbohydrate, fat, mineral, water and fluid intake of the mother should be provided. In terms of nutrition, if the mother turns night into day and day into night and meets her food and fluid needs in sufficient and various amounts, there is no harm in fasting. It is recommended that the baby be fed with breast milk up to 24 months.

While only breast milk is given to babies in the first 6 months, additional food is started on average in the 5th month. During this period, babies who have started complementary foods should be supported with external food supplements other than breast milk. After this month, fasting of mothers is relatively easy, as it has alternatives in terms of feeding the baby.

If the baby urinates 6-8 times a day, if the weight increases 150-200 g per week, the mother’s milk is sufficient

Considering that especially working mothers stay away from their babies all day long, their milk needs are met by expressing their milk and storing it under appropriate conditions. Another option is to apply for milk quotas, which are currently maintained under appropriate conditions, by working or even non-working mothers during the fasting period. Because breast milk can be stored for 3-5 days in the refrigerator, 2 weeks in the freezer, 3 months or even 6 months in the freezer.

Many studies show the superiority of breast milk and the better health of children who are breastfed. It has been shown in the literature that diarrheal disease, ear infections and allergy attacks are less common in breastfed babies. Apart from the financial gain it provides for the family economy, it is thought that the children who receive breast milk are more advanced. The rich nutritional value of breast milk is also related to the nutrition of the mother, and the necessary amount of protein, carbohydrate, vitamin support should be taken with food. While

breast milk is the basic need of the baby for the first 4 months, after 5*6 months, the baby is fed with supplementary food with the meal order, and now food is supplied from outside. Thus, when mothers think that the milk is low, they will be able to support their babies with food, and they will be able to fast with more peace of mind. By paying attention to the richness of nutrition and fluid intake with iftar and sahurhat, milk should be given at night when the baby falls asleep or milk should be kept under suitable conditions for use by expressing it.

If the baby’s clothes are not wet during night feedings, the baby should not be disturbed by changing the diaper. The baby can be gently lifted and breastfed without being awakened.

In the light of the knowledge that some foods and special teas increase the amount of breast milk today, applying this way when necessary is an option for those who are worried that they will fast and reduce their milk. Apart from the food diet list, the public is assisted in the supply of products in pharmacies.

One of our suggestions for not reducing breast milk is not neglecting milking or breastfeeding at appropriate intervals. An option for mothers who have little milk in the first 4 months despite everything is the availability of ingredients close to breast milk. Care should be taken to give breast milk as much as possible.

It is seen that fasting is licensed for women who breastfeed in the light of the Qur’an and hadiths. Therefore, while mothers who are able to fast will be able to fast by paying attention to the issues we have explained, mothers who are not able to do this and who are worried that they may risk their baby’s health will have to make up their fast later. Delay option is available.

Numbered days (fasting is prescribed for you)! But whoever among you gets sick or travels, now (let him fast) as many other days as (the days he can’t keep)! On those who cannot afford it, there is a ransom (for every day they cannot keep) as much as a poor person (for a day) can eat. However, whoever does good (giving more) out of his heart, then it is better for him. However, if you know, it is better for you to fast (despite the difficulty).
