Eating disorders, one of the most talked about issues recently, have actually been affecting the lives of many people for a long time. In society, 5-10% of women experience partial eating disorder.
Normal and healthy nutrition includes not only what the individual eats, but also what the individual eats at the same time, in which interval and how. In a healthy diet, by consuming 6 meals a day, including 3 main and 3 middle meals, we not only get all the nutrients at regular intervals, but also provide appetite control. By consuming whole grain carbohydrates, protein sources, vegetables, milk and dairy products, fruits and healthy fats as much as we need during the day and exercising regularly, we can control our weight and protect our health. However, individuals with eating disorders set their own rules apart from all these rules and especially refuse to take the carbohydrates and healthy fats they need. What is meant by eating disorder is the state of insufficient or excessive nutrition due to a disorder arising from the mental or emotional state of the individual. Today, although it is seen in individuals of all genders and all ages, its incidence has reached significant dimensions with the social media and the perception of pleasantness imposed on the society.
When we classify eating disorders;
-
Anorexia Nervosa
-
Bulimia Nervosa
-
Binge Eating Disorder
and treatments are easier in the early period.
In individuals with eating disorders;
-
Heart diseases,
-
Low blood pressure, low body temperature, edema in the abdomen,
-
Growth and development retardation in individuals starting at an early age,
-
Decrease in bone and muscle mass,
-
Fluid-electrolyte imbalance in the body,
-
Bleeding of the esophagus and stomach, diseases of the large intestine,
-
Wear on tooth enamel
-
Menstrual irregularity in women
many diseases are seen. In the progressive and untreated process, the patient’s nutritional problem causes organ damage, leading to treatment in heavy care units and even death.
Besides all these, do you seem to have an eating disorder? To understand this, I suggest you to objectively question whether you have the following symptoms:
Symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa:
-
Age and rejection of normal body weight compared to height
-
Very afraid of getting fat despite being thin
-
Inability to see menstruation for 3 months or more in menstruating women
-
Desire to use laxative (inducing defecation) medication
Symptoms of Blumia Nervosa:
-
More than one person in a certain time period don’t eat more than you can eat.
-
Inability to control oneself during an eating attack
-
With the fear of gaining weight after the attack, using laxatives or making oneself vomit, or the desire to do a lot of exercise, or long-term self-control fasting
If you have one or more of the above symptoms, if you lose a lot of weight or gain a lot of weight, you should go to a dietitian and solve your nutrition problem for your health. Remember, your health is much more valuable than the perception of pleasantness on your head. If the value (BMI) you get when you divide your weight by the square of your height is within the usual values and you are eating healthy, you do not need to starve yourself or have a weakness that will harm you. Make peace with your body, love yourself…
