Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can be considered as a common and complex disorder resulting from the interaction of genetic and environmental factors.
- Hyperandrogenism (increased production and/or increased activity of all male hormones in women),
- insulin resistance,
- Irregular period,
- Infertility (infertility),
- Hirsutism (male pattern hair growth) and
- It is characterized by abdominal obesity.
PCOS is the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age. It affects one in every 15 women.
Most women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome may experience abdominal fat, difficulty losing weight, excessive carbohydrate consumption and hypoglycemic periods (low blood sugar). Treatment and nutrition are very important as it carries a risk in terms of Type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia and cardiovascular diseases in the long term. Even a 5-10% decrease in body weight can cause ovulation to return and reduce symptoms.
Recommended Foods for PCOS
- Foods high in fiber should be added to the diet. Care should be taken to consume fresh vegetables and fruits, legumes, whole grain products.
- Anti-inflammatory foods: Spices such as turmeric, ginger, tomatoes, garlic, salmon, olive oil and chili peppers are foods with high anti-inflammatory effects.
- Low glycemic index foods: Vegetables such as asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, cucumber, green beans and zucchini; fruits such as apples, strawberries, grapes, oranges, peaches and plums.
Foods Not Recommended to Consume
- Refined carbohydrates: It is recommended to stay away from foods that are sources of refined carbohydrates. White bread; pastries such as cakes and pastries made of white flour; rice pilaf, pasta
- Sugary snacks and drinks: Instant juices and sodas containing sugar; candies, chocolates, and foods containing white sugar
- Potatoes, corn, peas, carrots, fresh figs, dried fruits can be counted among foods with a high glycemic index and should not be included in the PCOS diet list too often.
- Processed foods: Processed meats such as salami, sausage, sausage
- Foods such as fried foods, margarine, mayonnaise and cream should not be consumed.
- Foods high in salt such as pickled foods, frozen products and canned foods
- Foods labeled as sugar, high fructose, corn syrup and dextrose should be avoided. Before consuming foods, the habit of reading labels should be formed.
