by clinic

In order to celebrate the enthusiasm of the new year, we meet with our family, friends and loved ones at the pleasant tables, with a wide variety of food, nuts, dessert, chips, and appetizers. It should not be overdone at the tables where you meet with the excitement of entering the new year. Exaggerated foods preferred on New Year’s Eve can cause various digestive problems. If you do not want to regret what you ate after New Year’s Eve and do not want to cause stomach discomfort, you can choose both pleasant and healthy options while preparing the tables for New Year’s celebrations.

Dyt. from Yeni Yüzyıl University Gaziosmanpaşa Hospital Nutrition and Diet Department. Benan Koç; reminded the importance of paying attention to what we eat at the New Year’s table. He emphasized that it is the most practical way to create healthy menus without letting the attention to what we eat while eating together with the conversation.

Do not starve yourself all day.

Being hungry during the day will cause you to eat more and faster at the New Year’s table, considering that it will be overdone. You can start the day with a breakfast made with boiled eggs, cheese, vegetables and seasonal greens, and then a portion of yogurt or 1 glass of kefir can be consumed with a lean vegetable meal for a light lunch, so that you do not sit at the New Year’s table too hungry and you will not overeat.

Instead of greasy appetizers (stuffed stuffed, stuffed wrap, fried) choose mezes with yoghurt and olive oil.

Zucchini with yogurt, carrots, celery, roasted eggplant or red pepper, etc. prepared with olive oil. Appetizers can be added to your New Year’s menu, and portion control should be paid attention to while consuming.

A salad made with plenty of greens, boiled vegetable salad or legumes salad should definitely be included on our table.

Turkey, which is indispensable for New Year’s tables, is a healthy main course alternative because it is a less fatty meat. Instead of red meat with a high saturated fat content, boiled, grilled or oven-cooked chicken, turkey and fish should be preferred, and a salad made with seasonal greens should be added to the main course. Take care to stay away from carbohydrate sources (rice, pasta, potatoes) served with the main meal.

Watch out for calorie snacks.

While continuing the good entertainment and conversations after the table, attention should be paid to the calorie sources consumed, and the consumption of snacks (nuts, sweets, dried fruits or fruit) consumed after the meal should be suspended in order to minimize the stomach ailments and indigestion complaints that may occur. Choosing raw nuts and dried fruits instead of foods with high calorie content such as chips, chocolate, seeds, candies will allow you to make a healthy choice. Along with consuming the consumed nuts raw, portion control should also be taken into consideration.

Watch out for sweets.

If you overdo the amount of food at the New Year’s table, it will be a healthy choice not to consume sweets, but if sweets are to be consumed, you can prefer milk or fruit desserts (pumpkin or quince dessert made with less sugar, rice pudding, pudding) instead of heavy syrup desserts.

Acidic and sugary drinks should be avoided and mineral water or sugar-free drinks should be preferred.

Enjoy the conversations you have with your loved ones instead of focusing on food, as we enter this new year full of beautiful innovations. If you’ve overdone the amount of food on New Year’s Eve, you should go back to your healthy eating routine instead of continuing your unlimited eating behavior after New Year’s Eve, or feeling guilty and starving yourself. You can consume 2 cups of green tea a day, white tea or one of the herbal teas that help you get rid of edema, such as lemon balm. Taking a 30-45-minute walk outdoors on the first day of the new year will make you spend some of the extra calories taken on New Year’s Eve and make you feel fit. I wish you a happy and healthy year that you will spend with your loved ones to the fullest…
