Migraine

by clinic

Migraine is a chronic disorder characterized by recurrent moderate and severe headaches with some symptoms generally seen in the autonomic border system. The Greek word for migraine is hemicrania, “pain on one side of the head”[1]“half” and (cranio) are derived from the words “skull”.

The headache is normally unilateral (affects only one side of the head) and pulsating. It takes between 2-72 hours. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, photophobia (increased sensitivity to light), phonophobia (increased sensitivity to sound), and pain often increases with physical activity.[2]

Migraine is thought to be due to a mix of environmental and hereditary factors.[3]About two-thirds of the cases are also seen in the family.[4]Changing hormone levels can also be the cause: migraine is more common in boys than girls in pre-adolescent ages, but it affects women two to three times more often than men.[5][6]Migraine can often decrease during pregnancy.[5] The causes of migraine are not fully known. At the same time, it is thought to be a neurovascular disorder.[7]
